Granite countertops must be sealed every 12 to 18 months, though some sealants can last for five to 10 years. You can check whether your granite countertops need sealing by applying a drop of water in an inconspicuous area and waiting 15 minutes to see if the water darkens the countertop. Small kitchens may not have enough square footage to comfortably accommodate a 12-inch overhang, so a 10- or 11-inch one may be necessary.
