"Great honest contractors. They did my bathrooms, hot water heater, unclogged my house drain and they did a French drain so my basement is not wet anymore. I already hired them to do my whole roof in the spring. I will hire them anytime."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"Gary was great! When pulling up old tile we discovered the floor itself was rotten so he had to replace the whole thing. The vanity had to go too so he picked that up and installed it for me as well. Great communication, very professional job done and it looks great! I’ll definitely hire them again for the next project- maybe a deck!"

"We needed to have a tile floor in a bathroom that had stained grout (was put in during the 60's) and a bedroom that had stained carpet replaced with laminate flooring and shoe round included around the edge. This was especially hard in the bathroom where the walls are covered by tile, so the edging could not be nailed in the way they were in the bedroom. All looks great and is holding up well. Also, turned out the tiles that were popping up in the dining room had been put on using wall adhesive rather than the proper type of flooring adhesive needed. The guys were able to pop loose the tiles that needed to be replaced and grind off the old adhesive so they could be reused. I only had to get/use 4 new replacement tiles because they were successful in reusing every tile that was not broken before they arrived. They did a great job getting the grout to match and putting the 4 new tiles in an unobtrusive spot. Since these tiles had been put in during the 80's, we were not able to get matching tiles, so that really makes a big difference to us. Saved us a ton of money. I needed to separate a upper and lower level of a house to create a rental, and Handyman Xpress helped me find a simple, inexpensive way to make the current door work so that both halves of the house are private when the tenants choose, and they have access to both parts when the parties are in agreement. Love the convenience and flexibility. They also helped by cutting a ceiling tile to fit a closet ceiling that was missing it's ceiling. I had not scheduled that last part ahead of time, but they cheerfully added it to the to-do list and finished it quickly and it looks great."

"We initially called Mr Hargrove in August for an estimate on painting of the exterior trim, gutters, and around windows and doors, etc. on our two story brick house.  We were very impressed with his punctual call return and his punctual arrival for an estimate.  We needed the house pressure washed and scraped all around as the house had been neglected by the previous owners and needed serious work.  We liked his plan and his estimate and we decided on the spot to hire him and his company as there were many other things that were also going to be needed and we thought "this was our guy for anything that we need"  His crew showed up on the date and time specified and went to work immediately washing and scraping the exterior of the house.  They also had to remove all the storm windows for proper scraping and painting.  It was pretty hot, but his guys showed up every day and did a fantastic job.  We were and still are VERY impressed with the job they did and would hire them again in a minute!  During one particular nasty rain storm we noticed a serious leak in a couple of rooms and told James about it and he went right up on the roof and found where it had leaked and within the next few days, he had put on a new roof on that part of the house and it has not leaked since!  And the new shutters they installed look great!!  We have also had two of our neighbors stop by commenting on how good our house looks and wanted to know who did it and we happily gave them his number!  We are new to this area and we feel very fortunate to have found James Hargrove and his home improvement company and definitely plan on using them again!!

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Address foundation drainage and moisture management immediately. Sylva experiences heavy rainfall and high humidity, making French drains and crawl space encapsulation essential for home building. Evaluate your roof and gutters to prevent winter ice dams. You should also inspect your septic system to ensure it supports your household size. Finally, assess your heating system, as many local homes rely on propane or oil.

Helpful?

Select durable, moisture-resistant materials for home building in Sylva. Install metal roofing or high-wind architectural shingles to withstand heavy precipitation and ice. Fiber cement siding offers superior protection against humidity and insects compared to traditional wood. Use composite decking for outdoor spaces and pressure-treated lumber for any ground contact. Apply spray foam insulation in crawl spaces to effectively manage the demanding mountain climate.

Helpful?

During the first decade, home building focuses on managing moisture intrusion and minor foundation settlement. Between ten and twenty-five years, properties in Sylva require roof, deck, and HVAC replacements due to heavy weather exposure. Older homes demand structural attention, including pier and beam foundation repairs or full septic system replacements. Properties over fifty years old consistently require electrical rewiring and hazardous material remediation.

Helpful?

Retaining wall construction and grading require absolute precision during home building. North Carolina mountain terrain is steep, and improper slope management creates severe landslide risks. Stormwater runoff mistakes cause structural damage to foundations. Shortcuts in crawl space vapor barriers lead to rapid wood rot from high humidity. Additionally, improper chimney flashing or uninspected electrical work in older properties introduces significant fire hazards.

Helpful?

Yes, strategic home building significantly boosts resale appeal. Buyers in NC prioritize well-constructed outdoor decks to enjoy mountain views. Crawl space encapsulation and updated, fully permitted septic systems eliminate major buyer concerns and prevent inspection delays. Upgrading insulation and HVAC systems also adds substantial value by improving energy efficiency. Always secure proper permits, as undocumented work heavily complicates real estate transactions here.
