Artificial turf usually requires some sort of base. If you’re installing the grass over soil, you’ll want to add a weed barrier (weeds can damage your fake grass) and an artificial grass sub-base . Typically, this is a mixture of gravel and sand, like crushed miscellaneous base (CMB) or decomposed granite. If you're placing turf over concrete, you can skip the sub base and use a padded underlayment.

Mulch can increase the aesthetic and curb appeal of your property, and it provides a ton of benefits for your trees, shrubs, and even your foundation. Here are some of the benefits of installing mulch:

  • Helps regulate moisture in the soil for better plant and tree health

  • Can improve your home’s curb appeal and, therefore, your property value

  • Reduces how much runoff soaks into the soil around your foundation, potentially reducing the risk of foundation damage and leaking

If you like the look of mulch in your plant beds, be aware that it can attract a variety of pests, including termites. To avoid wood-to-foundation contact, leave a one-foot barrier around your house and fill it in with rocks or gravel, starting mulch past that barrier and working it outward into your plant beds. 

There should be a 1-inch thick layer of sand underneath your pavers in order to provide a proper base.

You should add 1 to 4 inches of mulch, depending on your garden type and needs. Keep in mind that no amount of mulch can completely prevent weeds, but a heavier coverage (closer to 4 inches) can suppress weeds enough that you are only seeing them sprout every few weeks. Finer mulch prevents weeds more effectively than large mulch, so if you’re using mulched leaves or shredded bark, 1 to 2 inches will likely suffice, while 3 to 4 inches is best for larger mulch, like bark chips or straw.
