"RnR Handyman quickly responded with an estimate which was in line with our expectations. Robert worked daily on the projects until they were completed with the exception of Sunday off. He added gutters, rescreened and painted porch supports, cleaned and stained the deck plus misc. handyman jobs. He is a pleasure to work with, comes to our home ready to work and is well organized. Rene', the office manager, quickly responds to calls, texts and emails. She is knowledgeable and very polite."

"Incredibly patient, took the time to explain all the work that needed to be done. Also made sure that the door properly fitted as well as making sure that the trim looked nice and paired well with the door altogether. Was very friendly and enthusiastic to make sure I was satisfied with the job done."

"Initially I hired Jack Bender to build a garage, however my county code did not allow me to go forward on the build so an extension to my home was considered and approved. Jack Bender and his team of professionals were able to build my sunroom and pergola deck AND remodel my front porch. All work performed was outstanding and a work of art. These guys are awesome. I am planning on hiring Jack and his team to do more work in the near future. All work was on budget and on time."

"Reybel not only repaired drywall, but installed a 3/4" wooden floor, which he took the time to match each piece of wood before installing. He is always on time, and shows up when he says he's going to. He also installed a double sliding door for me. His work is impeccable. I would highly recommend him."

"Spencers Custom Construction is a superb team of hard workers. They pay immaculate attention to every little detail of the job. They have pressure washed my house and deck and then stained the deck and stairs in addition to the hand railings to a side door. They installed metal mesh covers over my wide gutters and repaired a problem. In addition, they purchased and installed a heavy storm door and latch at the front door. When two exterior doors arrive they will install them. They leave the job site neat and tidy daily and do an excellent job on everything. Their quote was very fair and lower than anyone elseâ s and they are proud of the work they do. If you need something done, I highly recommend Spencers Custom Construction as they are very conscientious and knowledgeable. 252 229 1011 [email protected]"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

A contract should outline the scope of work, timelines, costs, payment schedule, and materials used for clarity and protection.

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

Hiring a woodworker can be expensive, depending on the job, but it’s very often well worth the investment. Woodworkers are able to provide custom pieces of furniture and handmade construction to present a finished product that is exactly to your specifications. If you have a specific vision for a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture or home feature, the cost of hiring a professional woodworker is worthwhile. Plus, you’ll often get a higher quality product than what you could buy in stores for a fraction of the price.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
