"Incredibly patient, took the time to explain all the work that needed to be done. Also made sure that the door properly fitted as well as making sure that the trim looked nice and paired well with the door altogether. Was very friendly and enthusiastic to make sure I was satisfied with the job done."

Small jobs welcome

"The first reason I hired Abe was because his office always communicated well about the work, the cost and timing of my project. The second is that Abe scheduled times with me and he and his crew always showed up on time or earlier. In these times thatâ  s practically a miracle! The wooden bookshelf (over 15 ft. long) is just what I asked for and beautifully finished. I am very pleased with his companyâ  s professionalism: the work itself and also with his office. Many, many thanks!"

"Initially I hired Jack Bender to build a garage, however my county code did not allow me to go forward on the build so an extension to my home was considered and approved. Jack Bender and his team of professionals were able to build my sunroom and pergola deck AND remodel my front porch. All work performed was outstanding and a work of art. These guys are awesome. I am planning on hiring Jack and his team to do more work in the near future. All work was on budget and on time."

"Reybel not only repaired drywall, but installed a 3/4" wooden floor, which he took the time to match each piece of wood before installing. He is always on time, and shows up when he says he's going to. He also installed a double sliding door for me. His work is impeccable. I would highly recommend him."

Customers say: Quick response

"I highly recommend Spencer Custom Construction. I had them do several large jobs for me this Spring of 2020 and I have not one complaint. They have very high standards and are not satisfied until everything is done properly. They are very neat and tidy and clean up every day before they leave the job. They are very pleasant and cheerful to have around. They say they do everything and I had them do everything from replacing my roof, pressure washing my house and deck, staining my deck, removing the popcorn from my ceilings and painting them, remodeling my bathroom, refinishing my wooden front door, replacing and painting metal doors, cleaning and putting mesh on my gutters, and washing my windows inside and out. Everything was done to my satisfaction and their perfection. They are located in Havelock, but they travel in all directions including Carteret and Onslow counties to work which is excellent. I live in Cape Carteret where it is difficult to get people to work as they are still busy with Hurricane repairs. Spencer Custom Construction is fair, honest and trustworthy. I am very pleased and definitely will call on them again."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Floor joists provide support and stability to the flooring installed above them, whether it be hardwood, tile, or carpet. They’re essentially horizontal beams that hold up the subfloor and everything that lies on top of it. Floor joists also help evenly distribute weight across their structure so that it’s shared between walls, beams, and your foundation.

Most landscape timbers are 8 feet long, but some are also available in 10-foot and 12-foot lengths. Choose the length that will allow you to install landscape timbers using the least amount of cutting to fit. Shorter timbers will allow you to more easily create angles and shorter plant bed sides.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

A contract should outline the scope of work, timelines, costs, payment schedule, and materials used for clarity and protection.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.
