"Miguel and the Prestige team did an awesome job installing new countertops in our kitchen renovation. It was a large job and our old cabinets and some house settling created unforeseen issues, but with Miguel’s experience in both fabricating and installation, he was able to deal with the problems, and the final result was perfect. Our location is very rural and was a long drive for him, but he made the trip twice and worked very hard to finish it in a reasonable time. Miguel brings great experience, know-how, work ethic and customer service to the job! We are planning another project and will definitely use him again! Five stars and highly recommend!"

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

No, you shouldn’t put hot pans on solid surface countertops because they’re only heat-resistant up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Play it safe and use trivits to prevent damage.

If you have light renovation experience, you should be able to build your own countertop made from wood or laminate. These tend to be the most DIY-friendly materials, but you’ll need to be comfortable using a circular saw and taking precise measurements. When it comes to installation, leave anything that involves plumbing, electricity, or gas lines to the pros.

There are several significant differences between laminate and quartz countertops. Quartz is much pricier than laminate but can last for decades, while laminate lasts around 15 years. Laminate can’t be repaired or resealed and is easier to damage than quartz, which can be repaired. Both quartz and laminate are prone to heat damage. Usually, the choice comes down to your budget.

Start your search for a reliable countertop contractor online, and look for companies that have high ratings from past customers. Check each of these companies on the Better Business Bureau website and rule out any that have a high number of complaints or an overall low rating. Next, contact the remaining companies and ask for a list of references and examples of past work. It’s best to choose a provider that has references that are still pleased with the work years later and one that provides professional-looking examples of how it serves its customers.

Extensive chips and cracks may require a full replacement of the countertop. The cost to install a new countertop is around $3,100 on average. But, if the damaged area is relatively small, you may want to consider repairing it yourself or calling in a qualified professional. Depending on the material, some epoxy and sandpaper may do the trick. Or you can consider painting laminate countertops or refinishing butcher block countertops.
