"I have to say that Boyce and his crew were amazing from the very beginning until the finish. All the other contractors I had come out asked me what I wanted to do and Boyce assessed the situation with my deck and told me what we needed to do. I had two other contractors from angis list out and neither even considered these things that needed to be addressed. Once we discussed all estimates and contractors Boyce and Gault services was the one to go with. Now that the project is complete we couldn’t be more satisfied with the work they did. I can honestly tell you that not one contractor would have done remotely close To what they did. It is an amazing job and we are extremely happy!"

"After the repair was done I noticed a leak in my bathroom ceiling where one of the roof vents were replaced. I called the Subcontractor Brian on a Saturday morning. The weather was cold and raining. He was at my house within the hour up on the roof and fixed the leak. I havent had any leaks since. I would hire Brain the Subcontractor again."

"The original issue was getting a leak repaired from the A/C.  They were not able to find and repair the leak.  I don't blame them though.  They repaired the attic crawl space access hole, which I am happy it is safer, but I am unhappy that the A/C line was not confirmed to be repaired.  I was only able to get the ceiling painted and I think they may have damaged my A/C.  The A/C worked before the repair and did not work after.  It is a tenant occupied property so I wasn't able to be present for the repair.  I was a little let down by this service.  The A/C is about a year old and now it is costing me additional money to get it diagnosed and repaired.

"They are absolutely the best contractors I have hired from Home Advisor so far. They was very professional, courteous, always on time, and they made sure everything was done to my satisfaction. They also cleaned up behind themselves before they left. It was also refreshing to have the owner of the company personally inspect the deck prior to collecting my payment. I'm hiring them for a bathroom remodel and enclosing the deck to become either a room or a playhouse for my grandson. I highly recommend these professionals to work on your home remodels because they are very reasonable and know what they are doing."

"The company is very affordable but; I am not satisfied with the work done. I had a repair done to a wood shed and the company split 2 of my boards in the process and used an old board found in my front yard that was not usable my neighbor gave that to me for a flower garden. The board WAS split and HE said it will be fine after I paint it. That is not true! As rain and cold touch that wood the split is going to be never ending. All contractors will advise not to use split wood. Lowes won't sell a piece of wood if it is split. I also had a shed installed. The company was advised of the product I was purchasing step by step, and after the project started, instead of advising me he advised me to purchase the wrong wood for the flooring he installed the weak wood anyway and I had to buy additional wood myself and lay on top of the floor. I installed a galvanized steel shed and when they saw the product came out of the box and it was rusted, I should have been contacted. "I was out of town for a few days." I feel if the company felt the product was not a good buy, they should have contacted me and let me decide. They installed a shed that was rusted on all sheets of metal inside and out, also the sheets has holes with no screws in the holes. All holes should have screws. My washers weren't used either when I asked for my washers back I was advised there was nothing left from the build. There is always product left from the build. To take product from a construction after a build especially the screws I purchased and left over product, I consider this as theft. They used metal sharp screws which meant they didn't install the shed correctly. If they installed it correctly, they should have been using the flat screws that came with the shed. I had to caulk and paint the shed top to bottom. If installed correctly, I should not be seeing the sky nor the ground. This meant the shed was not leveled via all 4 corners and they used their own personal sharp screws to make holes in areas to get the shed up. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN HOW THE OWNER TALKED TO ME AS IF I AM A DUMB FEMALE. HE ALSO LIED TO ME AND SAID THERE WAS NO LEFT OVER SCREWS AND WASHERS. HE DIDNT USE FLAT HEAD SCREWS NOR DID HE USE WASHERS THEN WHERE IS MY PRODUCT THAT WAS TAKEN FROM MY BUILD? I WANT TO PUT THE WASHERS IN WHERE THEY NEED TO BE TO PREVENT RAIN AND MORE RUST. It has to be a reason for washers needed in certain areas. I AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS COMPANY'S SERVICES. Good prices but poor quality performance. Maybe they build and tear down other things well, but; Sheds are not in their line of work. I didn't like being blamed for getting poor quality product when I purchased what I text to the owner and asked was the products ok he advised yes. He should have confessed he made a poor decision and should have asked me to go to store and get something different. His job is to protect my build and help me along I AM UPSET WITH THE FACT HE DIDN'T PROTECT MY PURCHASE AND DIDN'T TALK TO ME ABOUT HIS CHOICES. TOTAL LACK OF COMMUNICATION! HIS WAY OR NOTHING!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

The proper and most comfortable height for a deck stair riser, also called a step, is between four and seven inches. A height of seven inches is often considered ideal for a strain-free step that minimizes the risk of trips and falls. While it is possible to have risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. For optimal safety and comfort, pair a seven-inch riser with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. Always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements that differ from these general recommendations.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation, substructure, or subframe to ensure stability. This base is typically composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame's joists can be built from various materials like composite, plastic, timber, or metal, as long as the base can support the deck's weight without shifting. A professional deck builder might recommend installing the frame on a solid concrete base for added durability. The final design and materials for the substructure will depend on your budget, the type of deck, and environmental conditions.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.
