Hands of Gold Home Improvements has been a family owned business on the Outer Banks since 2007. We are proudly accredited by the Better Business Bureau. Some of the work we can do is landscaping, water features, interior and exterior painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, drywall, bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels, flooring (including tile, hardwood, vinyl, and carpet), decks, stone patios...we like to say "Anything from the roofline to the curb". We are a family run business with founder Dave Mennicucci leading our children, David and Eric on the job site. No job is too small but we also enjoy a large project too. Many of our customers love the fact that we can do so many different types of jobs and they only have one company coming in their home, versus multiple companies. Hands of Gold Home Improvements is looking forward to hearing from you and helping you with your next home improvement project!

Pavers and Hardscaping questions, answered by experts

Water that pools under pavers can erode the soil foundation and weaken the paver structure. In some situations, it can also cause mold and mildew growth. If that happens, you may need to start budgeting for the cost to build and install a patio to replace the damaged one.

DIY is possible, but professional installation ensures proper leveling, drainage, and durability.

You can put pavers over concrete following a similar procedure as above, but there are a few additional risks you need to be aware of—like stability, drainage, and the patio’s thickness. Once you lay a paver patio over concrete, it will be nearly impossible to treat any issues that your concrete may face, like cracks or water pooling. So while you may save some time and money on concrete removal and site prep, it may cost you more in the long run.

If pavers are uneven but not sunken, lift the affected bricks and check the bedding sand underneath. In many cases, simply smoothing out or adjusting the sand is enough to level them. Add or remove small amounts as needed, then press the pavers back into place and tap them with a mallet until they sit evenly with the surrounding surface.

The best way to stop your pavers from sinking is to ensure you've properly compacted the base layers. Use your paver compactor and work over the base layer several times to create the hardest possible base. If the soil and sand of your base are compact, you’ll experience less shifting and sinking.
