They can be the perfect choice for a small space or to close off an adjoining room, such as a home office or dining room.

The most common rough opening for a sliding glass door is 60 inches to 72 inches by 80 inches. A rough opening is the unframed space where your door will go.

The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. Occasionally, you'll find a hinge specifically made for right or left-handed doors with different attachment hardware or larger plates on one side. In most cases, the large side of the hinge goes on the frame.

It is possible to install hinges backward, so be careful when placing them. Position the hinge so that the hinge pin faces the direction the door will swing. Afterward, apply a dedicated lubricant such as silicone spray, white lithium grease, a metal or plastic lubricant, or an oil-based product like petroleum jelly.

You will need to cut or break a boomstick so it is wider than the door and long enough to anchor outside the door frame. Extend the broomstick horizontally under the doorknob, ensuring it's snug. Now using long screws and a drill, anchor the broomstick to the wall outside the door frame. Remember that you won't be able to open the door afterward. Do not proceed with this hack if your home has no alternative exit.
