"He and his team were personable polite and he was clearly very skilled Fixed all the problems with a 80+ double chimney that had been deferred maintenance when we bought the house. So pleased with his work that we had him go do some repairs on my mother’s brick porch. He is also a good communicator and gives great customer service. Would definitely recommend and use again"

"Michael was very friendly and VERY capable! Explained what he would be doing and the job was finished in an hour or less. Also fixed cracked mortar in base of fireplace. We will be much more comfortable building a nice, cozy fire during the coming winter. Thanks to Michael Vanwey!"

"Fine. I was told chimney was metal and didn’t need cleaning. Pretty much paid for absolutely nothing. Would have expected them to go up on the roof and inspect/clean sometime since I paid for it. When a maid comes to a clean house they don’t just leave since it’s clean they clean it more..."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

The cost for fire or smoke damage restoration services typically ranges from $3,000 to $50,000. The final price depends on the severity and extent of the damage and the specific areas affected.

It depends. For new ovens, it’s best to run a few empty cycles to prepare the oven for use and to keep any manufacturing byproducts from entering your food. But if your oven is smoking due to a few burnt pieces of old food, then it probably won’t hurt to eat it. If there’s a lot of smoke, then your food probably won’t taste good, even if it might not be harmful to consume.

Hard materials like glass, metal, and hardwood floors, washable fabrics, and undamaged electrical appliances can often be salvaged after a fire, although it depends on the extent of the damage. For washable fabrics, make sure to use a phosphate mix during the washing process to extract the smoke smell. There are a few things you should throw away after a fire, like canned foods and cosmetics, even if they don’t look like they’re damaged.

After a house fire, you should not reenter your home unless the fire crew has told you it’s safe to do so. In the longer term, you should not attempt to make repairs to the house on your own. Professional crews are trained to clean up after a fire (including smoke and soot damage), dry out any water damage from the firefighter crews, and make the necessary structural, plumbing, and electrical repairs—and this is all likely covered by insurance.

As with any smoking appliance, a smoking oven is a concerning fire risk. It also negatively impacts your indoor air quality, which can put vulnerable people at risk of breathing problems. A dirty oven can catch fire if you don’t stay on top of regular maintenance, so remember to check your oven for signs that it’s time for a cleaning and remove buildup every three months to stay on the safe side.
