Screen Repair questions, answered by experts

The cost ultimately depends on size, but roughly, the most popular screen materials will set you back anywhere from around $0.25 to over $25 per square foot. Fiberglass and aluminum are usually less expensive at around $0.25 to $0.70 per square foot. Solar screens cost about $7.50 to $15 per square foot, while security screens range from around $10 to $25 per square foot.

If you plan to only use it occasionally, a DIY fabric screen offers a low-cost option that is simple to put up and take down as needed. It also provides a way to test out how you could continue using the extra space in the future. But if you plan to frequently spend time in the space, investing in a customized, professionally installed garage door screen offers the potential for this unlikely space to become a brand new hub for your household.

Window screen repair costs around $310 on average, ranging from $100 to $480, depending on material, the type of window screen, the window size, the accessibility of the window, and whether you need to replace the window screen frame. You can save money on window screen repair costs by using a more affordable material like vinyl or fiberglass, rescreening instead of replacing them, and swapping multiple screens at once to combine labor costs.

The steps to replace a retractable screen can vary, but these are the general steps: First, remove the screen cover to expose the screen mechanism and remove the clip that holds the screen in place. Next, depress the end of the screen mechanism so it releases from the door frame. Take your new screen and fit one end into the frame. You may need to rotate the mechanism to engage the spring before inserting the other end into the frame. Finally, pull the screen down the length of the door’s opening and lock it in place with the clip.

Professionals clean window screens the same way a homeowner can—by removing the screens and cleaning them with a sponge. A window cleaning pro may come with better equipment, like a high powered wet/dry vacuum or pressure washer to speed up the process and achieve a deeper clean.
