When hiring a plumber to install or repair gas pipes, consider asking them the following questions: 

  • Do you have insurance and a professional license to do the job? 

  • How long will the project take to complete? 

  • Will I need to hire additional professionals for excavation or landscaping? 

  • Do you have references from previous clients? 

  • Do you belong to any relevant trade associations? 

Even though their jobs sound similar—both professions work on pipes—a plumber and pipefitter actually have very different jobs, and pipefitting isn’t considered plumbing. Pipefitting is done in commercial and industrial buildings and factories, and the pipes carry gas, chemicals, acid, and other potentially hazardous substances. Instead of galvanized piping for propane, you should consider coated copper, black iron, or corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST). For underground propane line installation, you can use polyethylene (PE).
