"I hired JF Asphalt (Juan Peron) to dig out roots and patch my asphalt driveway, crack fill and seal coat my whole driveway. They did the job in two days and I highly recommend them. Excellent quality work at a fair price. And Juan is great at communications. The driveway looks great and I would definitely hire them again!"

"I've had marginal experience with Gary Gunning-Painting Systems, both good experiences and bad experiences. He;s not very timely in regards to getting back. The quality of his work is good but professionalism is not. He is very pricey. I will use him again only if I had to."

"Charles "Cee" and his team did a great installing a drain pipe and connecting the drain pipe to my pool to keep the water away from some other areas that we need to keep dry. He was professional, courteous and got right to work. He said they could get it all done in a single day and I was pleasantly surprised when it took them less than a half day. I would definitely hire them again."

"Davis Paving did an excellent job on our driveway! The driveway is quite long, more like a short road, and had many potholes and ruts. Davis Paving repaired the driveway and put down new gravel, building up areas that were in dire need. Now we have a nice smooth driveway! No more muddy potholes! As part of the contract, Davis did the same for my son’s driveway next door. He, too, is quite happy with the results! I highly recommend Davis Paving!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.

Since it has a smoother surface using a mixture of finer rock and sand, 41A tends to be the best asphalt grade for a driveway, especially for residential driveways. Other options are available, but more homeowners choose 41A for a smoother asphalt driveway. Talk with your asphalt driveway professional for recommendations of the best grade for your specific driveway.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.

It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each material and decide on your priorities for your driveway. Gravel won’t be an appropriate choice if your driveway experiences heavy traffic. You’ll find that you need to level and top it off regularly, which could make the material a much more expensive option.
