"My installer, Jose, was amazing! He was so accommodating to fit my schedule in a short timeframe. Jose was professional and very knowledgeable about installing tile. He installed my tile quickly and was very clean while working. I would definitely recommend Jose for tile work. Jose is also a great handyman because he also installed my TV on the wall which was difficult to do because the wall was covered in porcelain tile. THANK YOU, JOSE!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!"

"We hired another tile person through Angi's List to perform the installation of our backsplash. Unfortunately, on the first day he became ill and ended up in the hospital. Our kitchen was a mess and shut down for the job. We quickly went on Angi's List and found Junior Saravia Ceramic Tile to do the job. Catherine took our information and promptly called us. She had Saravia Chavez (her father) on our doorstop within hours. Saravia was as polite a gentleman as you could find. He assessed the job and gave us a very fair price. He began work on the spot and stayed until 9:30 pm to get all the tile laid. This was on a Saturday. Saravia came back Monday and grouted the job. His work is exceptional and our backsplash looks terrific. This is a business you can count on. The best thing is that Saravia did not mind me watching and asking questions so I could learn something about tile installation. He was a great teacher as the next day we had a tile issue in a bathroom that I was able to repair myself. I would not try a full job. I will leave that to the professional like Saravia when we need such services again. Note that he has been laying tile for over 21 years and knows his trade. I understand that he is from El Salvador some 21 plus years ago and speaks fair english. Catherine is fluent in english having been born here. Saravia is patient when speaking with him and the use of Google Translate helped. These are good people who go the extra mile to help you out. They got us out of a difficult situation. I will hire them again when the time comes."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

The rule tells you how to cut tile to install it in a corner. The 3/4/5 rule recommends that you should have 3 feet across on one straight line, four feet on the other perpendicular line, and 5 feet of length from the end of one of the lines to the other. You’re making a right triangle with the tile, and the hypotenuse (the line across from where the 3-foot lie and 4-foot line meet) should be 5 feet long.

If you’re out of spacers for your tile installation, you can use pennies. Each time you place a tile, stick the pennies around the edges (on the sides and the corners). Like working with spacers, you’ll want the same amount of space around each tile before they set.

For professional labor and materials, it would cost between $6,000 and $28,000 to install 1,000 square feet of Saltillo tile flooring. If that’s out of your budget, you could consider laying the tiles yourself or choosing a less expensive type of flooring. For example, vinyl flooring costs just $2 to $7 per square foot, so for a 1,000-square-foot space, you’d pay $2,000 to $7,000.

Deciding between using a shower pan or tile will likely come down to the shower’s design. You can learn how to install a shower pan liner, but it has a standard look similar to most other showers, though there is some flexibility for material and color choices. Tile, on the other hand, can be customized and is set directly into the shower base. However, a shower tile floor is more difficult to install than a shower pan.

Yes, but you should only put tile directly on drywall in smaller areas that don’t experience excess moisture. For example, a small kitchen tile backsplash could work, but installing tile directly on the drywall in a bathroom or other chronically damp area is not a good idea. Either way, a cement backer board is a far more reliable solution, as drywall is susceptible to moisture and can warp or cause your tiles to crack.
