"I hired Summerlin Ext to rebuild my mountain home's retention wall. It was a daunting task. Build a road, tear down an existing, rotting RR tie wall, rebuild a solid foundation and install a new wall. Jesse and his crew did an amazing job. They moved tons of earth to accommodate a Verti-blok wall that will last forever and accommodate the desired drainage for a WNC mountain home. Ask him to show you the photos, you will be amazed! Summerlin Ext will get the job done, no matter what."

"David is great. He explained everything to me and made sure I understood the variables and impacts during each decision. He installed a bathroom in my basement where there hadn't been one before. The final product looked like it had always been there -- it "belonged" in my house -- and increased to usability of our lower level, allowing us to rent part of it out. I had him come back and do the backsplash in my kitchen. Again -- flawless work with reasonable pricing and helpful communication. Thanks, David!"

"The contracted the work off to a third party. Jon took longer than expected. The windows was installed pretty good from the looks. Communication could have been better with knowing the job will take longer and what types of trims I wanted for the windows. As the contractor that was hired for this job by this company. Did a good job with putting up decent trim. As for the new windows they look great. I purchased the myself and hired sentri homes to install them. I will need to have a my siding on my house redone to be closer to the new windows so the gaps are not so obvious. That was not expected at first. But from old storm windows and not knowing how they were put in originally. There was some unknown things that was learned from the job being completed. I will have the siding of the house slightly done to match really good for what I wanted later on. My only concern is better communication with sentri homes. Overall they were great when I did talk to them."

"Gary was great! When pulling up old tile we discovered the floor itself was rotten so he had to replace the whole thing. The vanity had to go too so he picked that up and installed it for me as well. Great communication, very professional job done and it looks great! I’ll definitely hire them again for the next project- maybe a deck!"

"We initially called Mr Hargrove in August for an estimate on painting of the exterior trim, gutters, and around windows and doors, etc. on our two story brick house.  We were very impressed with his punctual call return and his punctual arrival for an estimate.  We needed the house pressure washed and scraped all around as the house had been neglected by the previous owners and needed serious work.  We liked his plan and his estimate and we decided on the spot to hire him and his company as there were many other things that were also going to be needed and we thought "this was our guy for anything that we need"  His crew showed up on the date and time specified and went to work immediately washing and scraping the exterior of the house.  They also had to remove all the storm windows for proper scraping and painting.  It was pretty hot, but his guys showed up every day and did a fantastic job.  We were and still are VERY impressed with the job they did and would hire them again in a minute!  During one particular nasty rain storm we noticed a serious leak in a couple of rooms and told James about it and he went right up on the roof and found where it had leaked and within the next few days, he had put on a new roof on that part of the house and it has not leaked since!  And the new shutters they installed look great!!  We have also had two of our neighbors stop by commenting on how good our house looks and wanted to know who did it and we happily gave them his number!  We are new to this area and we feel very fortunate to have found James Hargrove and his home improvement company and definitely plan on using them again!!

Home Building questions, answered by experts

A complete permit record with a final Certificate of Occupancy is the clearest indicator of proper home building. High-quality work in NC also features climate-appropriate weatherproofing, including well-sealed penetrations and proper flashing. You should look for foundation footings dug at least eighteen inches below grade to handle the freeze-thaw cycle. Excellent foundation drainage and properly sized septic systems further demonstrate that the work meets all local safety standards.

Helpful?

New home building in Columbus requires eighteen to thirty months from initial design through final inspections. Permitting and septic evaluations take multiple weeks, while the construction phase lasts eight to fourteen months. Winter ice events and limited material delivery access add significant time to this schedule. You must also factor in wait times of several months to secure available local professionals before the work even begins.

Helpful?

After completing home building, you should permanently retain all local building permits, inspection sign-off cards, and your Certificate of Occupancy. These documents prove your project meets safety standards. You must also keep all local health department approvals for septic systems and well construction records. Since local archives in Columbus contain gaps, maintaining your own complete set of records ensures you are prepared for future property sales or insurance claims.

Helpful?

Homeowners underestimate the time required for septic system evaluations and rural utility extensions. The clay-heavy soils and sloped terrain in Columbus demand engineered foundation designs and complex drainage systems. Winter ice storms and summer thunderstorms cause significant construction delays. You must account for these regional weather patterns and the limited pool of available local professionals when setting your schedule for home building.

Helpful?

Assess your property's septic system capacity first, as this dictates any expansion limits for home building. You must verify your local zoning designations, deed restrictions, and flood zone status. Inspect the existing structure for crawl space moisture damage or foundation issues caused by the expansive clay soils found throughout NC. Finally, confirm your electrical service and private well yield can support the additional demands of your new project.
