High-performance lacquers, paints, and glazes are common materials for refinishing.

A kitchen remodel can be a major undertaking, depending on how much you change. If you’re changing the kitchen layout, you might be tempted to scrap everything and start fresh, but there are a few different ways to save money throughout the process. 

  • Keep your existing cabinets and reface or repaint them 

  • Consider choosing budget appliances and fixtures 

  • DIY when possible, such as painting walls yourself

  • Choose prefabricated cabinets instead of custom cabinetry

  • Choose affordable flooring options where possible

You can paint over wood, wood-laminate, and metal cabinets, but you need to prepare the surface first. Plastic laminate cabinets and thin veneers may accept a layer of paint depending on their condition, but they require special techniques and paints. If your cabinets sag or have significant damage, it may be a better investment to replace your cabinets than paint over them.

In many cases, you can use a roller to paint detached cabinet doors and cabinet sides more quickly. However, expect at least some brush or spray gun work to complete the project, especially if your cabinets have complex insets, which are difficult to paint with a roller.

Technically, you can paint over stained cabinets without sanding. There are specialty paints that are made precisely for not sanding cabinets. However, many interior cabinet paints work just as well. 

To make sure you have a smooth surface without sanding, you’ll need to degrease the cabinets thoroughly, add a bonding coat for strength, add primer, and then finally paint your cabinets. It’s still a process regardless of whether you sand your cabinets.
