"Brandon and his team did a great job installing a line for my house generator and another circuit for my bathroom. They arrived on time, excellent job and clean up. The price was fair and I would highly recommend them."

"Walker Electric did a great job each time I hired them. On separate occasions they installed two ceiling fans, installed an electric outlet, and finally installed a full house generator. I will have them out again when there is need, and recommend their service to family and friends."

"It was not an emergency call, but our generator wasn't working properly, and they came out & serviced it and took the time needed to figure out exactly what was wrong. Not only was our service person (Brandon) friendly and knowledgeable, but I found the company to be a bit more reasonably priced than another company that I'd contacted previously. I also appreciated that they weren't trying to sell me any kind of a service contract. (In fact, they gave me pointers on what to do to make sure everything was working okay and the kinds of small maintenance tasks I could take care of on my own.)"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

The amount of time a standby generator can run continuously is around 3,000 hours on average. However, standby generators can generally run indefinitely as long as they have a continuous fuel supply. Generators hooked up to a home’s natural gas supply are the best option for extended usage, as these won’t rely on a finite fuel supply based on how much you have in storage. Generators running on liquid propane or diesel won’t last as long, as these require fuel storage and regular refueling to stay running.

In some situations, yes. Never try to put biofuel into any home generator without checking the specifics first. If a generator has the ability to run on diesel, it can also run pure biofuel (the clear kind made from seed oils, for example). But if you are using biofuel made from animal fats or vegetable oils, the generator will need significant modifications before it can handle a sludgier type of biofuel.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.
