We understand at the point of your real estate transaction when you meet us, you want the deal to go through. We want that for you! And we can help you navigate what is important and what items are less critical. We pride ourselves on customer service and satisfaction, and because we are a multi-inspector firm, we are able to have more time for you. We can divide the work and be more readily available to answer your questions in person, on the phone, or by email. Brantley’s lifetime connections in the construction industry in the Piedmont Triad area are another great reason to choose Parkwood Property Inspections for your home inspection. We are able to put you in touch with respected, affordable, and licensed contractors to complete any repairs required. We do not get compensated in any way by recommending a contractor to you. It is an added service we provide to make sure you have someone you can trust and that will do the job right the first time.

Home Inspection questions, answered by experts

Any unexplained smell in your house should be investigated. However, some home odors are "red flag" worrisome because they pose immediate health and safety risks. Odors should be taken seriously when accompanied by headaches, nausea, or lightheadedness. If you smell an egg-like aroma, this is probably natural gas. You should leave the home immediately, and  contact your gas company.

Certified fire door inspectors should inspect fire doors. These professionals receive training to specifically assess the condition, functionality, and compliance of fire doors. They often hold credentials from groups like the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) or the International Fire Door Inspector Association (IFDIA). While fire marshals won’t usually do hands-on inspections, they’ll check that doors are being maintained properly during routine safety audits. If a building relies on fire doors for code compliance, it needs someone who understands the details—the difference between a cosmetic issue and a safety failure—and standards to sign off with confidence.

There are several signs that your chimney is dirty and ready for cleaning. Look for the following:

  • A buildup of creosote and soot inside the chimney

  • The room fills with smoke when you use the fireplace

  • The damper is black with creosote residue

  • When you light a fire, it quickly goes out

In general, it’s best to schedule a cleaning at least once a year before winter so you can safely use the fireplace.

Services typically take 1-2 hours, depending on the stove’s condition and accessibility.

Full home electrical inspections are mandatory if you’re buying a new home, but if you’re just looking for a safety checkup, you have some flexibility. If you don’t have any concerns and your property is relatively new, a basic inspection is usually sufficient. If it’s been a long time since your home was last inspected, or it’s an older home, a full home inspection can help catch any concerns that may fly under the radar.
