"Caring Hands lawn service did an excellent job! I hired them to do my 1st lawn mowing of the season. There was a delay because of several days of rain but the 1st decent day of weather the manager called ahead to say they were on their way. Very friendly & professional & I will definitely call them back for next spring."

"He is a perfectionist and he is very good at what he does. I have known him for many years before he started his official landscaping business so he has done work for me for the last 10 years or so. You should have your work plans laid down and planned before you hire him, it is way better to have it done this way and he will have it done. It is better to approach this business with this in mind and not without a plan. I trust him a 100%!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Landscape design can be a simple service that includes a drawing or visual representation of how your yard can be set up and optimized for your intended purposes. But it can also include all of the manual labor to make your vision a reality. When you speak with your landscape designer, ensure everyone understands the specific services you want. Some add-on services may include the following:

  • Sourcing and delivery of raw materials

  • Professional installation of features, including pergolas, decks, and pathways

  • Drainage system design

  • Recommendations for specific plants and trees

While you can leave roots in the ground, if you don’t want the shrub to regrow again over time, it’s best not to leave any roots behind. Ensure you remove as much of the shrub as possible, including the root ball and any main roots you can see, to prevent new growth. Some gardeners opt for using a chemical treatment to prevent the stump from growing back, but this can kill beneficial microorganisms living in your soil.

There are two main times of year to apply mulch: mid to late spring and late fall. Spreading mulch in mid to late spring helps protect new seedlings as the soil warms up. It's best to wait until temperatures are steady, as mulching too early in the spring can slow down the soil's warming process and hinder plant growth. Fall mulching is also beneficial, as it insulates the soil and helps regulate its temperature when the first frosts arrive.

If you use the wrong plants for your gardening zone, you’ll likely get less than desirable yields from them. In some cases, your plants can even die. It’s important to ensure that your plants are able to survive in your hardiness zone before getting them into the ground.

If you are xeriscaping a lawn from scratch, your best bet for preparing the lawn is to work with a xeriscaping specialist in your area. The most common first step to making the transformation, however, will be to remove the turfgrass from your lawn. The subsequent steps will often include amending the soil to support new plants and installing low-drip or drip irrigation systems.
