"I had extensive hail damage and called Clay with Sprague. He handled 100% of everything from picking out and installing new windows, siding, roof, gutters, and a new deck. He also handled the insurance aspect of the process. All I had to do was stay out of the way. They were very professional and were able to deal with any situation as they came up. "I had Big Sky Exterior Designs re-roof my 2000 sq.ft. house and garage due to hail damage from the August 2019 storm. The 4 man crew was qualified and efficient. I asked them if they could finish it in one day and they did. They worked from just after 7:00 am till after 9:00 pm. I was a construction inspector for many years and I know they did a really good job and kept the backyard gates closed keeping my dogs safe. I have found a few nails around the perimeter of the house but that is to be expected as it was almost dark by the time they were doing the clean up. I would definitely hire them again."

If you’re wondering how to make wood siding last longer, including Composite T1-11, inspect it annually or quarterly to spot and repair cracks, holes, or chipped areas. You’ll also want to re-stain the wood every 3 to 5  years or repaint every 7 to 10 years for protection (note that repainting requires stripping and sanding off old paint as well). Lastly, keep up with regular cleanings using a garden hose or low-pressure power washer to help prevent grime and discoloration.

A self-etching primer is the best option for aluminum siding. These are specifically designed to bond with bare metals, among other surfaces, leading to better adhesion and corrosion resistance. An oil-based primer is a good alternative if you can’t find a self-etching primer.

Hail as small as 3/4 inch (about the size of a penny) can cause damage to your siding. When hail reaches 1 inch in size, you can expect to see more cracks, chips, and holes, and hail that’s 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 inches around will cause significant damage. If you see hail that’s 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches or more in size, the damage is likely to be extensive and possibly even dangerous.

If you buy new cedar, the process of cutting it usually roughs up the surface enough that it doesn’t require sanding. However, if you buy older cedar or you’re repurposing it from another application, it’s a good idea to sand it. This helps the stain settle into the grain, and results in a more uniform appearance.

You should stain your home's cedar siding every three to seven years for maximum protection and to maintain its appearance. Homeowners who live in harsh climates with high humidity and lots of direct sunlight should plan staining every three years, while those who live in milder locations can plan on seven. In particularly harsh climates, consider using an opaque stain variety for the longest-lasting protection.
