"The job was done in a proficient and professional manner. The painting crew came in and went over the work to be done to confirm color choices and rooms to be painted. Using a wire brush, forcefully scrub the surface to remove paint from metal. You’ll want to remove any lingering rust, too. For larger areas with caked-on rust, you may need to use a wire brush drill attachment. If the paint still won’t budge, apply a chemical paint stripper to the area and scrape off the paint, after following the paint stripper’s instructions.

The biggest issue with painting your interior walls with exterior paint isn’t the way the paint looks or performs—it’s the lack of ventilation. The higher quantities of VOCs in exterior paint will have a harder time dispersing in an enclosed space, so do everything you can to direct them out—like turning on a fan and opening your windows and doors. Afterward, you can simply prime and redo your walls with interior paint, and no one will know the difference.

The easiest and fastest way to remove paint from a surface is to use a chemical paint stripper to loosen the paint and then remove the paint using a paint scraper. You can also speed up the process by making the area as accessible as possible, which could include removing window sashes or taking doors off the hinges.

You can paint over lead paint, or “encapsulate” it with a special paint that includes an ingredient called an encapsulant. The EPA approves encapsulation as a lead paint removal method as long as the paint remains undisturbed. Standard types of paint without an “encapsulant” from the big box stores or hardware stores do not meet EPA standards for remediation of lead-based paint.

If you recently splashed paint on the wrong area of a wooden object, remove it with a solvent or caustic paint stripper. Some paint that has yet to dry may be removable by hand with coarse sandpaper or a plastic scraper. Another trick for removing dried-on paint is rubbing a dab of nail polish remover on the paint to remove it, but avoid touching the bare wood surface.
