Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Small hairline cracks in plaster walls are not serious and are mostly cosmetic, but larger or widespread cracks indicate structural problems that need repair. 

  • Cracks 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner: Cosmetic cracks you can repair if desired.

  • Cracks wider than 0.5 centimeters or widespread cracks: Structural repair is needed, either DIY or by a pro.

  • Cracks 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) or wider: Contact a plaster repair professional.

Watch for large, deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, and cracks along the walls where they meet the ceiling. Repair these cracks to prevent further damage.

Generally, your homeowner’s insurance might only cover ceiling collapses caused by problems under the coverage, such as a busted pipe. But if the ceiling collapse resulted from owner negligence, maintenance issues, or other reasons excluded by your policy, you could be on your own. Some policies might cover damages caused by the collapse but not the repair itself. Check with your policy carrier for the most accurate information regarding ceiling collapse coverage.

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. Although their applications are very similar, no drywall compound and spackle are not the same thing. Spackle is a bit thicker and is used to patch holes as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. Joint compound shrinks a bit more and can be more temperamental to spread. However, one benefit is that you can use joint compound as spackle (for small jobs), but you can’t use spackle as joint compound.  

Plaster is a beautiful finish but is labor-intensive to install and remove. It’s vulnerable to cracking and more sensitive to moisture variance than drywall. Installing plaster on a new wall is an expensive process that can take days to weeks, depending on the scope. Removing a plaster wall can also be quite expensive and time-consuming.
