"The overall experience was that we had to terminate them due to nonprofessional work in several areas. Crew of 5-6 men painted the interior of our home and some of them were not good painters and it showed. We were left with excessive paint runs. Some of the rooms and doors needed another coat of paint. Did not use drop cloths. There was paint on hinges. Paint splatter on counter tops, fridge, etc. They were willing to correct the issues, but, we felt that maybe it was more of a job than they could handle. The owners were nice and accommodating... but, maybe they need to hire people who can do a professional job (especially if they are charging professional rates)."

"We had to get a total roof replacement and some painting work done. We did our homework and interviewed several contractors. When I met Michael, I knew that he would be the one to hire for the job. Michael was very easy to work with and went out of his way to ensure that everything was done professionally, efficiently and effectively. My husband and I are very pleased that we chose 1st Choice Construction Services, LLC. Micheal and his team were great!"

"Mr. Wilson came out promptly to assess my problem and we scheduled a time for him to come back and do the repairs. He was having eye problems on the day he came and he admits he should have had someone else to do the job. He replaced the board in the shower window but he didn't measure it correctly all the way across the window so there is still a gap which he filled with caulking. In the process he cracked my the marble backdrop, dropped paint in my bathtub, and did not do a good job caulking underneath the window board where the backdrop meets. He left a mess of trash and shoeprints in my bathtub. I called him about the crack in the backdrop and he promised he would find a way to repair or replace if needed. I waited 2 weeks and I had to call him to get a status on when he would repair. He told me he would return my call and its been another week. Still hadn't seen or heard from him. I can't rate the value for money because He didn't charge me. I guess because he didn't do the job correctly, but I still have a cracked backdrop and a caulking mess and paint in my tub. Don't get me wrong Mr. Wilson was a very nice man but ones work speaks volumes. This is the second non-positive experience I've had with HomeAdvisor. I don't think I'll be using their suggestions again."

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Yes, paint thinner can damage some surfaces. Specifically, it can cause a lot of damage to laminate flooring if applied incorrectly.

Costs range from $2 to $7 per square foot, depending on surface type, paint layers, and removal method.

You can sell a house with lead paint, but there are several requirements. If you are aware that lead paint exists anywhere in the home, you must disclose that to potential buyers. Required home inspections will often uncover lead paint, especially for older houses where lead paint may still be a problem. If you have taken steps to encapsulate lead, you should provide buyers with full documentation of the project so it won’t cause any problems later on.

Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint, but success depends on the condition of the existing paint and proper surface preparation. If the previous coating is in good shape (not cracked, peeling, or flaky), you can paint over it with less prep work. However, for the most durable and professional-looking results, follow these key preparation steps:

  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the exterior to remove all dirt, grime, and mildew. A pressure washer can be very effective for this.

  • Scrape and Sand: If the old paint is peeling, cracked, or flaky, you must scrape off all loose paint. After scraping, sand the surface to create a smooth, even base for the new paint. Sanding is especially important for wood siding.

  • Apply Primer: Using a quality exterior primer is highly recommended. It ensures the new paint adheres properly, improves durability, and provides a uniform finish. If you are painting a lighter color over a dark one, a tinted primer will help cover the old color more effectively.

Some brands offer paint-and-primer-in-one products for convenience. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will not only increase your home's curb appeal but also help protect your siding and extend its life.

You do not have to remove lead paint if the surface is not chipping or peeling or if there are no pregnant people or children under the age of six who live in or regularly visit your home. Lead paint is a particular risk for young children whose brains and bodies are not fully developed. Experts strongly recommend that you call a pro to remove lead paint if it’s peeling or flaking, no matter who lives in the home. You can experience lead poisoning by breathing in or ingesting just a small amount of it.
