"We want to thank St. Charles Painting and Remodeling for the exceptional job they did rebuilding and staining our cedar fence. This was a complex project involving replacement of more than 200 pickets and 30 supports. Mark Walsh and his team managed and completed the project with much attention to detail. They provided excellent follow up as well. A special thank you is due to Barb Smith, the Office Manager/Controller for her excellent communication and follow up with us during a very busy time of year for the company. She always answered the phone and coordinated the project. We definitely recommend this company."

Small jobs welcome

"I purchased a Living Social Deal to have my bathtub refinished.  The deal cost $190.  When I called to schedule the appointment, they offered an additional service for only $50, and they return the next day and re-caulk the entire tub after the paint has dried to the touch.  I agreed that I wanted to add that service.  They were very helpful on the phone and told me what to do to prep the tub for refinishing.  A few days before my appointment, they called to confirm and again they were very helpful and answered all of my questions.  On the day of service, the painter arrived on time.  He took great care to prep my bathroom for the job, and to set up a vent so the fumes would go out the window.  I was home during the work, and the fumes never got bad.  I was able to carry on with my normal day.  He did a great job and cleaned up after himself.  He gave me a care sheet and clearly explained the do's and dont's.  The next day, a different painter arrived to remove the tape and re-caulk the tub.  He called when he was on his way, and he arrived on time.  He re-caulked the tub and allowed me to check his work and approve before settling up with me for the extra $50.  Since the work has been done, I called back with a few questions, and again found their customer service to be top-notch.  The new finish has been on the tub for over a month now, and it looks amazing.  Our old tub was really a mess, and by looking at it now, you would never know.  I really appreciate the great, attentive service I've received from Beckner Painting, and would recommend them to anyone.

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Waterproof paint creates a barrier to hold back moisture, but it doesn’t eliminate the source of the water. If you hire a basement waterproofing contractor, many will tell you that waterproof paint is only a temporary solution. On average, you can expect it to last from six months to two years in a wet basement before deteriorating.

If you want to achieve a deeper, darker stain color, wait 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off. However, wipe it off faster for a lighter tone. When wiping off the stain during this part of the process, be sure to work in the direction of the wood’s grain for best results.

Wood stain is not flammable after it dries. The solvent in wood stain is what causes the liquid form to be highly flammable, but the stain drying process involves the solvents dissolving, which leaves behind a non-flammable product on your wood project. Wood stain is, however, flammable before you apply it, so you should always store partially full cans and used wood stain rags away from sources of heat and open flames.

When staining a deck, don’t skip surface prep, avoid staining damp or dirty boards, and don’t apply stain in extreme heat, cold, or wet conditions. Never overload the wood with a stain, as too much can cause tackiness or peeling. Also, don’t forget to test a small area first to ensure the color and finish look right.
