You shouldn’t hook up a solar panel directly to a battery. That can damage the solar battery and your appliances over time. Instead, install a charge controller between your solar panel and solar battery. Charge controllers regulate voltage, prevent overcharging, and minimize the amount of electrical current to protect your battery from voltage spikes.

Depending on the climate in your area, the best time to install solar panels is either winter or early spring. Summer is a fine time to install panels, too, but it tends to be the busy season, so prices may be higher and companies may have packed schedules. The installation process can take more time than expected between getting permits and finalizing a design, so start as soon as you can.

In almost every case, solar panels need to be removed to replace roof shingles. In some cases, such as solar installations where the panels are on raised platforms above the roof surface, installers may be able to install new shingles without removing the solar installation. However, to get a quality roofing installation, panels need to come off. Most roofing contractors won’t remove or reinstall solar panels as part of a roofing project, so you’ll need to contact your solar provider.

You’ll need to make sure you have a big enough solar panel to meet your well pump’s power demands, but you can use solar power to fully operate your well pump. It’s also a good idea to have battery storage to hold the solar power so you can still use your well pump after dark.

It’s possible to install solar on a tar and gravel roof, but it’s far from the best roofing material for solar. Solar installations require roof penetrations, and although your solar installer will seal the holes, they still increase the risk of roof leaks. Flat roofs are already more likely to leak than sloped roofs, and adding solar will only make leaks more likely.
