How tall your mulch should be around your tree depends on the type of mulch you use, but aim for 3 to 4 inches as a rule of thumb. Wood from black walnut, magnolia, eucalyptus, red maple, and invasive species like tree of heaven are not recommended for mulching. These trees release allelochemicals that can suppress plant growth. When it rains, decomposed granite can become muddy and mushy in texture and start to wash away, leading to erosion of the surface. Decomposed granite’s inability to endure heavy rainfall is one of its biggest drawbacks.
