"The day before today my husband called for an estimate from Drain Masters, and was quoted $269 to come unclog a sewer lateral causing a flood in my basement. The service man arrived and we went downstairs to look at the area and he asked me if I had a lateral clean out in my backyard (I said no) and then the employee stood there, in the water, writing up a ticket, NEVER looking at the source of the backup, where the water was coming from, where the clogged line was, nothing. But quoted me $410 for his work for today and when I said my husband received a quote (of $269) over the phone the day before, the service man stated that it wasn't possible for my husband to get a quote because his company does not provide quotes over the phone and that my husband must have called a different company. I stated my husband is not a liar, I was right there when called and obtained the estimate, and that I would not pay $410 without an explanation as to why there was an additional charge of $141, especially since the service guy did not go in the area that had the backed up sewer line. There was no answer. I was literally ignored. I told him I didn't want the service because he had no explanation of why he was charging me $141 more than what was quoted, not to mention insinuating my husband was lying about the phone quote. Then he told me that I owed him a $69 service charge and I asked why he was charging me this fee (Drain Masters offers free estimates) and he stated this was the fee for coming out and telling me what was wrong. Then I said that we already knew what was wrong (we had a back-up causing a flood) and I was not going to pay the $69 fee especially because he didn't do anything but stand in front of me and write up a ticket. He said he would write the ticket up that I declined services and then he asked me to sign and initial the ticket in three different places. I asked why he needed my signature three times and he said to authorize services. I replied that I didn't authorize him to provide his services therefore, I didn't need to sign anything. He ripped off a copy of the ticket for me and stormed out my basement door. After the fact, I did confirm online that Drain Masters does provide free estimates. I also called around to obtain estimates from other companies with this highest I was given being $189. My husband ended up going to a rental shop the very same day Drain Masters came to my home and rented a 100 ft sewer snake to run through our line to fix the clog, which, worked perfectly and was exactly $42.10 (including tax) to rent. In hindsight, I cannot help but feel that Drain Masters and the service man who came to my home are dishonest or at the very least have questionable practices. The service man tried to up-charge me with no explanation, he tried to charge me a service charge when he did nothing and the company he works for provides free estimates, he lied to my face about the company not providing estimates over the phone, and in so many words told me my husband is a liar. But, I mostly feels this company is shady is because one of the places the service man asked me to sign states "Work Order Authorization" which has a small message to see reverse side, when I flipped the invoice over the paragraph states "failure to pay the persons supplying these services will result in the filing of a mechanic's lien on the property" in big bold, all caps font. I can't help but wonder if this was the service guy's way of getting me to sign the order and then turning around and trying to bill me for services that were not provided. Do an online search for Drain Master reviews and review the BBB website. There are many, many complaints similar to mine. ADDENDUM: Minutes after posting a review, Mattie called my husband and stated we owed the $69 service fee because they do not offer free estimates. Anything online that says so is outdated. I guess it is easier to say they do not offer free estimates than to remove the "free estimates" from their web page."
