When deciding between stripping or sanding kitchen cabinets, the short answer is it depends on the condition of your cabinets and your end goal for them. If the cabinets are in fairly good condition and don’t have several layers of paint on them, sanding is a good option. On the other hand, older cabinets with more blemishes or marks will benefit from paint stripping, since it will give any future finishes a clean slate.

The vinyl finish on thermofoil cabinets makes them durable and scratch-resistant, especially compared to painted cabinets. However, if they do get deep scratches, it can be challenging to fix, and you may be unable to repair them.

Most professionally-manufactured outdoor cabinets are already weatherproof. Perform regular maintenance and cover your cabinets in the winter to provide even more protection. Wood cabinets are the most vulnerable to damage from weather, but you can prevent damage by applying a sealant or varnish.
