Small jobs welcome

"Response to request for estimate was quick and work began the day after signed contract. The new retaining wall and paver patio are beautiful allowing us to use the backyard for entertaining. They leveled an area for an above ground pool and sodded the front yard. They did an excellent job, very professional and courteous. I would highly recommend their service."

"We paid a previous contractor to put in a retaining wall, fence and level our backyard, which was a 5 foot steep hill at the time. After the old contractor put up a nearly finished fence, 6 months later it was left incomplete and rotting. We hired the Lake Man and his crew to fix the mess that was left behind. In 1 days time not only did we have a retaining wall and cleaned up fence, but he laid fresh top soil for grass, trimmed our trees, cleaned up our garden area, prepped our driver way for paving and to top it all off weed ate around the property! I highly recommend this crew of real life Superheroes!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The best time to plant is between spring and autumn. Springtime weather is typically mild and is when nurseries start to bloom. When the summer weather arrives and it’s hot out, it’s best to avoid planting bare-root plants, but you can still plant many in-container varieties. The first sign of fall is another great opportunity to plant biennials if you live in southern states, or a lovely vegetable garden up north.

The soil around your foundation should slope down and away from your home, not toward it. If the grading drops the farther you are from your home, you can enhance the slope by removing more soil. Mark off a few feet from your house and dig up some of this soil. Regrading around your fountain should encourage water to flow away from your home and not collect or “pond.”

While both fall and spring are suitable times of the year for planting trees, fall is typically the better option. Soil stays warm long enough to allow tree roots to establish in fall before they go dormant, while spring might give way to intense summer heat before spring-planted trees have time to grow strong roots.

You may need to lay sod on the areas you dug up once you get the okay from the contractor. It will take about 30 to 45 days for the sod to take root. Consult a local sod installer to get an accurate estimate of the timeline of your specific yard-enhancement project.

A scattering of leaves won’t pose a problem through the winter, but a thicker layer of leaves may not decompose before the first frost and can instead weigh down your grass and harbor mold or fungi. A thick layer of leaves also cuts off light and air that grass needs to grow. That’s why we suggest removing thick leaf layers within several days if possible. If your lawn goes dormant over the winter and snow has already caught up with you, then remove the leaves in early spring before your grass-growing season starts so your lawn can thrive.
