"I have not received the invoice yet, so I am only speculating about the value for money question above; however, these guys did a fantastic job. They far superseded my expectations by accomplishing more than I had originally anticipated. They were courteous, professional, and competent and managed to get a tremendous amount of work done in a reasonable time. They even corrected something that another contractor had left undone. I will call these guys again when I need an electrician. They fixed two dimmer switches that have never worked properly the entire time we have lived here, repaired GFCI outlets, did some arduous work (literally ditch-digging) to replace a wire to the septic system that had gone bad, and offered great advice when I had lots of questions. They took great care to clean up after their work and removed their shoes every time, they entered the home to ensure the carpets were not dirty."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Natural gas generators are designed to run for extended periods of time, such as power outages during a natural disaster. Since there’s no limit to the supply of natural gas, they don’t need to stop for refills. However, generators do need maintenance, including pauses to check and add oil. Constantly running them will also cause a lot more wear and tear, leading to a shorter lifespan.

Yes. You can connect your home back-up battery to a generator with its designated charger. Be sure that the output of the generator matches the input requirements for the battery for best results.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit
