"Michael was very easy to work with and fully transparent on every step of the way. His output is very high quality and he restored our basement to fantastic condition. I appreciated the care he took on our project and the additional input he gave to offer suggestions on overall improvements to the space. If you hire him for a job then you're in great hands; Would hire again!"

"Overall the project went "good". We are still waiting to hear back on a "fix" that is needed. It has been weeks now, so I anticipate we will have to fix it ourselves. I was waiting for a completed project before I wrote this review, but I believe based on no feedback that they feel this project is completed, and we need to do our own repair (which would be okay if they told us what to do, and closed the loop on the project). The big stuff was done very well--the fireplace insert and most of the brick work. They did come back to fix small issues: TV cable (they picked the wrong one, and had to bust out the wall a second time), the slate on the floor had to be touched up (a bubble in the grout), and the grout around the insert had to be painted (it was cement color and stood out like a sore thumb. I am not sure if there was colored grout that would have worked better, but we had cement color and the fireplace/brick is brown). I asked for the color of the paint they used for future touch up, but I have not received a response (so much time has past that I don't think I will).
The outstanding issue is a brick pc had a noticeable gap in it, and it was in a highly visible spot in a corner and easily accessible (it was really one piece and looked easy to us to fix by their professional). We were told by the brick person it could be fixed (but sounded like a big deal), and then we were told by the general contractor that it was a manufacturers defect in the brick piece, and we would have to pay $350 for repair. We had to uncomfortably push back (they should have picked a different piece of brick was our thought). Once the brick piece was loosened, it was VERY easy to see that it was a VERY easy fix...re-position it, and glue it back on somehow. Right now, it is sitting in position, but not glued in place. we will seek advice on what product to use to glue it in place. Then the project will be completed. Besides the fixable issues, the only cosmetic regret is the way the corner turned out. it is near a wrap around wall, and I envisioned that the brick would slightly wrap the wall, but it didn't, which now leaves me with a very very small piece of wall to paint someday - I suppose we will use a very very tiny brush and a steady hand. Finally, I was looking for a general contractor to partner with on several other upcoming projects (bathroom remodels, etc)...I am not sure yet if I would contact Carter Custom. I really felt like I was a bother, and we had to stay on top of the details. Perhaps we are too small of a customer for their line of business.
Overall I wish them well, and their people are very nice. The overall value (price verses quality) was out of proportion due to the attention to detail and follow up (I paid close to $15,000 for a fireplace, and that didn't include the 60" TV)."

"I am very pleased with results of my kitchen remodel project and would gladly hire Craftsman Renovations again anytime. All of the work was first rate and Dex and Mike were both professional and competent. They are very good communicators and I always knew what was to be done next and what I needed to do as well. All of the subcontractors were excellent and treated my property respectfully. Frankly, kitchen remodels can be difficult, but Dex and Mike made the experience as painless as possible. I would recommend them to anyone (and already have done so)."

"Kluy Custom Kitchen Remodel
Problem: Kitchen was small outdated and poorly lit.  It also did not have 200 amp service.
The house is @ 40 years old in a neighbourhood we enjoy and on a lot we really liked. We wanted to open up the kitchen to get more space/storage and upgrade the appliances including bringing in 200 amp service.  We entertain frequently and wanted a guest friendly kitchen. We wanted others to be able to join in the dinner prep fun or
just share a glass of wine and conversation.
Special considerations:
We?ve known Dennis, Linda and their son Craig Kluy for years and watched
them go through remodels of their own home and other people?s homes.  It was a concern because we didn?t want the
friendship adversely impacted by this project.
We?ve seen enough of their work to know they did great things but we?ve
never been a client.  The friendship was
more important than the job and we didn?t want to risk harming it.  However we trusted their honesty, experience
creativity and judgement.  We discussed
our concerns up front with them and decided to do this project with them and we
are so thankful we did! What a fabulous outcome!
Linda first made me measure the existing storage space I had,
including spices so I would know how much I space I had and make sure I
expanded what was really important.  This
was a really good idea.  We discussed my
ideas and they looked at the area and drawings I had done and Dennis provided
the scale floor plan options.   I have
trouble visualizing things so I measured things and taped the measurements on
the floor so I could get a better idea.
That really helped get a better idea of spaces and work patterns before design
was completed.
Craig is the creative force that pulled it together and made it sparkle.  His creativity provided many
very classy finishing touches that solved problems. We removed two walls and
opened the area up.  The natural light from existing windows flooded the area and made a wonderfully open space to
work in.  We had tile on the floor originally and replaced it with heated tiles that went beautifully with the
rest of the kitchen.  We loved the heated floor this last winter!  We had enough space to put in a 12 foot island with an induction cook top and a glass island vent.  We also used granite on the counter tops and island.  It?s quite striking!   I have a wonderful pantry area and plenty of storage.  As I said I have trouble visualizing and they helped me preview ideas so
I had a comfort level with the design. Thanks to them I have many many nice features that I would not have
thought of that are practical for the way I cook.  It?s a great working kitchen space!  No space was wasted! One thing I love is the
wonderful work light I now have.  The kitchen is fabulous!  Works great and did I mention that Craig has an excellent eye for color?  He can see a color and visualize the other colors that it works well with it.  It?s a pretty amazing talent!  The wall paint,
granite, and the color of the wood cabinets all go together in a craftsman style and the colors are beautiful!
The actual construction started on Memorial Day weekend 2012 and was finished so we could move in in late September2012.  October saw finishing touches and some adjustments.
I can?t say enough about how well we all worked together and the idea exchange.  Linda has a flair for design and practical application which I was able to appreciate as a Kluy Custom client.  (She is a really fine cook in
her home and we?ve enjoyed invitations to her table with pleasure.   Not only do I have a beautiful kitchen but 2
years later I love it even more!   It?s a great Holiday family gathering place and everyone has a good time.  It works
great every day and for large groups and holidays!  And we didn?t have to build/buy a new house to get it!

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

You can paint your ceiling or install a drywall ceiling if the ceiling is unfinished, as they take up less headroom than drop ceilings.

If there are pipes in the way of ceiling installation, you can do one of two things: reroute the pipes or adjust the installation to fit, which will cost extra.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.

To determine if your basement walls are suitable for finishing, assess their structural integrity and moisture conditions. Look for any signs of damage, such as cracks, bowing, or excessive moisture. Ensure proper drainage and address any underlying issues before proceeding.

Consult with a professional if you're uncertain about the structural stability or potential risks associated with finishing your basement walls.

Renovations that add functionality or more comfortable floor space generally add the most value when remodeling your home. Attic or basement finishing can add floor space without altering the home's structure, saving you renovation money while adding valuable space. Smaller improvements, such as installing smart-home components or replacing entry doors and windows, also experience high ROIs.
