"AAA Tree Pros did an excellent job removing 2 diseased ash trees from our property. They offered a fair price, scheduled the work very quickly, and handled everything safely and professionally. The crew removed the trees, hauled away all the wood, and ground the stumps thoroughly. The cleanup was great as well. Very happy with the service and would definitely recommend them."

Customers say: True professional

"J&J offered a highly competitive bid to down three (3) very large, dead widow-maker oak trees at our residence, one as high as 80-ft tall. James and his two assistants arrived as promised, on time, and completed the entire job in less than one hour. They neatly stacked the cutup trunks aside (for our future fire-pit usage) like it was some feather-weight Legos kids' game! They also included cutting up previous dead-falls in the price. I highly recommend J&J to local homeowners, and in fact have forwarded their color ad-card to a relative's well-known construction business in Pequot Lakes. FIVE-STARS!"

"Mike and his crew did a great job. We had 10 trees removed. They did everything they could to minimize damage to the lawn and the surrounding plants. They did the job quickly, efficiently and cleaned up like they were never there. After the stumps were removed they filled, leveled and put down seed. We will definitely hire them again and recommend them to our friends and neighbors."

"I wish you had a rating of 10 as this company was a Perfect 10. Robert (owner) first met with me to discuss the project. Robert was extremely helpful in answering EVERY question and concern that I had. I felt very comfortable that he understood what I expected and all was accomplished. Then there's his employees. Awesome job - very detailed and fun! I told them all I wanted to do was water the areas and watch the grass grow and that is what I am doing. 9 trees in 3 different areas were removed and several trees were cleaned up and look great. Thank you, 1st Choice Tree & Landscaping for helping me out!!!!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Deciduous shade trees (the type of trees whose leaves fall off in autumn) need to be pruned in late winter—between February and March. That’s because it’s easier to find and remove sick or dead branches when no leaves are present. And wounds close and heal faster in colder temperatures so pruning them at this time also makes them less prone to infection.

You should avoid cutting off the top of mature cherry trees. This process is called tree topping, and it’s not recommended for cherry trees—or any trees, for that matter. Tree topping removes between one-third to half of the length of the tree trunk, resulting in structurally unsound, fruitless suckers. The only exception is for saplings. Young pie, sour, and tart cherry trees that are over 30 inches tall in the fall or winter before the tree blooms can benefit from heading cuts.

Whether you should remove the roots of a dead tree depends on whether they’re damaging nearby areas. For instance, if the roots continue to grow near sidewalks, driveways, or the foundation of your home, they can cause damage. If you want to plant something else in that spot, removing the roots can make it easier for the new tree or plant to grow.

For trimming trees, your best tool is a pair of pruning shears or loppers. Both options work best for branches that are under 3 inches in diameter. Trimming trees with a larger diameter may require a robust tool like a small chainsaw or a handsaw, so take into account your tree’s diameter when deciding between tools.

A general rule is that trees need 10 gallons of water for each inch of the tree’s diameter. For large trees, that can amount to approximately 160 gallons of water or more. Watering big trees to this extent can take quite a bit of time using a hose. For this reason, you may consider installing a soaker hose or sprinkler system to make the job easier.
