"We found MN Building Contractors at the Rochester home show. The bid was comparable to the 8 contractors who bid. Bill offered suggestions and options we felt would improve the overall appearance, which is why we choose him. We had new windows, storm doors, siding, facia, soffit and gutter installed. His crews were professional, on time and did excellent work and cleaned up very well. Everything was completed in a timely manor. There were a few minor issues Bill addressed quickly and personally. Bill communicated well from bidding to completion, so we always knew what and who to expect and when. Working with Bill was like working with a friend. "We had a water leak in an upstairs bathroom that damaged a downstairs ceiling and the subfloor. Yes, you can mix siding types to create a unique design. However, it requires thoughtful planning to execute properly. You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Brick and stone are the most durable and longest-lasting siding materials, often lasting for 100 years or more with proper maintenance. Copper is another material known to last over 100 years, though it can develop a greenish patina over time. Zinc is a metal siding that can last 80-100 years. While these options are the most expensive, they offer superior value and longevity. For a more affordable yet durable choice, stucco can last 50 to 80 years in dry climates. Fiber cement siding is another excellent middle ground, offering a lifespan of 50 years or more with low maintenance at a lower cost than stone or brick.

Whether or not your homeowners insurance covers EIFS stucco siding depends on the insurance company and the specifics of the policy. Some insurance companies will not cover EIFS due to its susceptibility to moisture damage, and some companies will only cover EIFS manufactured and installed after a certain date, since newer systems mitigate potential damage concerns better than older ones.

Siding is one of your home’s first lines of defense against extreme weather. If you fail to repair or replace your damaged siding, your home is exposed to wind, snow, and rain—all of which can cause structural damage.
