He drew up a design and gave me ideas based on what I described I was looking for. Nick even met me at the store to help me pick out my finishings! Every detail from the hinges, to handles, backsplash and granite Nick helped me pick out. Beautiful craftsmanship, I’ve never seen anything like it and he even threw in some extra surprises!! You do not get quality or service like this at a big box store or from other contractors. My kitchen is absolutely stunning and anyone that has ever seen it is amazed at the beauty. There are three primary ways to attach upper kitchen cabinets to a wall, and installers may use more than one method at a time. The most common method is to drive screws through the back of the cabinets and into studs in the wall behind. Sometimes cabinets are glued to the wall with strong adhesive. Often a combination of screws and adhesive is desirable. The last way is by hanging the cabinets on hardware brackets that attach to the wall before cabinet installation.

While it’s possible to purchase RTA inset cabinets that you assemble yourself, DIYing the installation may not be advisable unless you have advanced carpentry skills. That’s because the cabinet boxes, drawers, and doors all need to be perfectly level and precisely aligned in order for everything to open and close properly. This becomes even more challenging if your walls aren’t plumb or your floors and ceilings aren’t perfectly level.

Plywood is usually the best base material for built-in home office cabinets and bookshelves. It is extremely sturdy, and you can paint or add veneer to it to improve its look. It can support large amounts of weight without breaking down or splintering. Plywood is usually more affordable than hardwoods. However, if your budget is large enough, beautifully stained hardwood cabinets and bookshelves look amazing.

When comparing wood versus MDF, there are some widespread misconceptions that solid wood is more reliable and durable. Despite this common belief, wood isn't always a superior choice and MDF may be a better building material choice in some cases. Here are some examples:

  • MDF is more affordable than wood. You can buy MDF for as low as one-quarter of the wood price.

  • MDF is a smooth surface with no knots or woodgrain, which makes it easier to finish and cut with a saw. 

  • MDF is a standard choice for shelving and trim.

  • Unlike MDF, solid wood isn't the best option for cabinets or drawers. It can shrink, crack, or bend in response to changes in temperature and humidity, while MDF has a high moisture and fire resistance level and is less likely to break or warp.

The weight capacity depends on the construction method and the quality of the hardware.  Basic side-mount slides often support 50 pounds, but less expensive versions may be rated lower. Properly built drawers with dado joints and heavy-duty, full-extension slides can typically support between 75 and 100 lbs. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s weight rating for your specific drawer slides.
