"Excellent!! We were so impressed by Cory and amazed he and his team could perform work the same day. Husband and I relocated to Wisconsin from Alaska in June 2018. Hot water heater in house we bought brand new 9/2017. It broke and warranty didn’t transfer to new owners. Cory commented install in old unit not done by professionals. When work completed on new unit, it was like comparing a duct taped wreck to a sleek sports-car ! Excellent Plus job!! Cannot say enough thanks for kindness to us, Husband and I of 48 years feel Blessed Cory was our Professional. ?"

"I would recommend Preston and Mallard Mechanical to anybody in the area looking to buy a new furnace/AC, or even just general HVAC maintenance. We closed on our house on a Friday with the AC not working and the furnace on its way out. We called Mallard Mechanical that morning and the equipment was ordered that same day and the install scheduled for the following Tuesday. The day of the install Preston was on site right on time and got our old AC and furnace torn out and the new system put in all in the same day. He was extremely professional and kept a VERY clean work site. He made sure to go over everything about the new system with my wife and I and even took care of setting up the city inspection for the new system. Last but absolutely not least, Mallard Mechanical's prices are extremely fair and I cannot imagine finding better service anywhere else for as good of a price as we got with Mallard Mechanical. Thank you again to Preston and Mallard Mechanical!"

"I can't say enough about my past experiences. I had a new furnace installed this winter. Corey was simply amazing walking me through the process and went significantly above and beyond to make me comfortable with my decision. After the purchase, Sam installed the new furnace and did a great job."

"My wife and I decided to have a split entry heat pump installed, so I contacted 4 contactors. JoMac was first to respond, first to come out, first to submit a bid, and after I accepted the bid, Joe completed the work in short order. Joe listens to the consumer well and is anxious to do a good job on the project; he knows that happy customers mean more business. Joe is polite and outgoing; he even brought cuccumbers for us. Two days after the job was done, Joe called just to see how things were going."

"Ferraraâ s installed a completely new HVAC system in our house. I had several other quotes come in and they beat them all. But more importantly, they did excellent work and had terrific customer service. And they did it all in a timely manner. I strongly recommend using this company and plan on using them for any future needs."

"Jim with North Alabama Technical Services removed some items from my computer so that I could send emails and attend to items I needed to address that day. As planned, the next day he thoroughly cleaned my computer, he also made helpful suggestions while working on my computer. I would call him again if needed and I thought the fee was reasonable."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Most HVAC surge protectors last about three to five years, depending on how often your home experiences blackouts or brownouts. If your unit is susceptible to more frequent electrical surges, consider replacing your surge protector every two years. Consult your HVAC professional to determine when and how often to replace your HVAC surge protectors.

When faced with HVAC issues, it's best to begin by ensuring the thermostat settings are correct for either heating or cooling. If the system isn't responding, check the thermostat for proper function and power supply. It's also important to examine air filters, as clogged ones can decrease performance. Confirm the power supply to the system by checking the circuit breakers and fuses. If these basic steps fail to resolve the issue, contact an HVAC professional for a more detailed diagnosis and repair.

The cost to repair an air conditioner averages around $350 to $450, but the price can range from $100 to over $3,000. The final cost depends on the type of air conditioner, the extent of the damage, and the specific parts that need replacement. For example, repairing a window AC unit typically costs between $100 and $250, while central air conditioner repairs can range from $300 to $3,000. A simple fix like replacing a dirty filter might only cost $10 to $50, but a major issue like a broken compressor could cost around $2,000 or more, potentially making it more cost-effective to replace the entire system. Due to the need for specialty tools and handling of refrigerants, repairs more complex than changing a filter are best left to a professional.

In most cases, homeowners insurance will cover an AC replacement if it was damaged due to a covered peril—such as theft, fire, or storms. So, if your air conditioner needs replacing due to regular wear and tear, your insurance company probably won’t pay for a new one. However, home warranties often cover HVAC repairs and replacements.

It’s not customary to tip HVAC technicians, and most professionals won’t expect it. However, it’s a nice way of showing your appreciation for the work they do, especially if they come out in inclement weather or on a weekend or holiday to fix an emergency issue if your heat or AC goes out in extreme temperatures. A good tip would be between 10% to 20% of the total bill, depending on how above and beyond the tech goes for your repair and on the total cost of your HVAC repair or service. For something like a routine tune-up or scheduled maintenance, tips aren’t expected.
