"LeafFilter doesn't clean gutters, they sell and install their LeafFilter Gutter products and only clean the gutters if you buy their product. I can't even begin to afford their product so I wasn't able to get my gutter cleaned by them."

"Mike Hansen Roofing was the fourth in a list of five roofers we phoned.  They called us back promptly.  They came to the house right away, found out exactly what we wanted and advised on what was needed, and gave an accurate estimate within a couple days.  By this time, some of the others on the list hadn't even to bother to return our call.  Their estimator was very knowledgeable about code and insurance requirements and the entire procedure plus had the ability to handle the work scheduling.  We were so impressed we pretty much made up our mind right then, but forced ourselved to wait and see what the other bidders came in at.  Two local bids (one a contractor we had used before and one name given to us by a friend) and one company that travels around following storms for work gave us estimates to compare.  Mike Hansen's was the lowest bid, the fastest able to schedule it done, and had by far and away the best guarentee and best product.  They showed up for work when scheduled, calling first so we always knew what to expect.  The work was done quickly without being "slap dash".  Once they got the old roof removed and the problems with the roof decking were found, we had to add to the original work order.  Then besides that, we decided to add the gutters and to insulate a back dormer.  So, even with changes and additions, they continued without missing a beat or delaying.  When finished...it looked like a new house!  They seriously left the place looking like they were never there.  They presented a final bill after an inspection of the job, and gave 30 days befoe they would take any money so we didn't have to float any financing until the insurance company paid up.  Oh - they even came to the door with photos for us to give to the insurance company and the building inspector.  Never did we dream that having the roof replaced could be the highlight of the summer, but it was!"

Gutter Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year, in the spring and in the fall, to remove the debris from trees that can clog the eavestroughs and downspouts. Debris like leaves, twigs, and seed pods can build up and cause your gutters to overflow, potentially causing damage to your roof and foundation. Water backing up under the shingles can rot the edge of your roofline. Overflow water falling next to your foundation can end up leaking into your basement or crawl space.

Downspouts channel water from your roof and gutters into the ground following a specific route so water doesn’t accumulate around your house’s foundation. Without a downspout, the standing water will wash away material and disrupt the soil, leading to foundation erosion. The standing water will also form ice around your house during cold weather, causing a safety hazard.

Using less toilet paper is the easiest way to prevent future clogs. Also, avoid flushing sanitary products, thick paper towels, or hair down the toilet. If you’ve been using a brick in the tank to reduce the water used to flush the toilet, take it out immediately. Bricks will eventually fall apart and clog your toilet drain. Keeping your toilet lid closed also helps avoid future clogs.

Frequently, when water flows over gutters, it indicates a potential clog, necessitating cleaning. For instance, if a twig becomes lodged in the downspout, it can lead to a traffic jam, causing more leaves and sticks to accumulate. Another potential issue is an incorrect pitch, as gutters should channel water toward the downspout. If you observe water overflowing the end cap or leaking through it, it suggests that your gutters are improperly tilted.

If you want to avoid burying your downspouts, several alternatives can help direct water away from your home's foundation. One option is to connect a rain barrel to your downspout. During a storm, the barrel collects water that you can later use for irrigating your lawn or garden. Another common solution is to install an above-ground downspout extension. This can be done in a couple of ways:

  • Splash Guards: Placing a splash guard, available at most hardware stores, under your downspout can act as a simple funnel to direct water away from the house.

  • Downspout Extensions: You can add an extension to the end of the downspout's elbow to carry water further into your yard. Some extensions are flexible, allowing you to maneuver them around landscaping.

These above-ground solutions are particularly useful if your home has a slab foundation that you cannot dig up. However, they have limitations. An extension may not move water as far from your home as an underground system. More importantly, if your yard slopes back toward your house, these methods will be ineffective, and burying your downspouts remains the best option to prevent potential flooding and water damage.
