"LeafFilter doesn't clean gutters, they sell and install their LeafFilter Gutter products and only clean the gutters if you buy their product. I can't even begin to afford their product so I wasn't able to get my gutter cleaned by them."

"They did a great job and have a great product. The true test for me was when I have two trees with helicopters. So the true test was to make sure that both helicopters would not get stock between the gutter. Their covers to the gutter are great. Both helicopters did not get stuck to the covers. Waited a long time to get someone to do the gutter and fina'ly found this company. It was really worth the wait. i would highly recommend them to everyone to do your gutters."

"Scheduling was easy and then they kept me informed every step of the way via email including an email with a picture of the staff person who would be coming to the house to do the windows. The windows are freaky clean. I can't stop looking at them, well actually through them since there is nothing to see. They have never been this clean before. Will definitely be hiring A Step Up Window Cleaning again."

I guess I felt a bit hoodwinked - and perhaps its just my naivete.  When I hear a deal that talks about getting 30 windows cleaned for $99, that's a great deal.  Apparently I didn't realize that 30 windows actually = 30 panes of glass.  i.e. two panes of glass in double hung window - so the amount of washing immediately is cut in half!  Add to that more complicated historic windows with multiple lights like I have on my first floor - and the amount available to be washed w/in the window of the deal is cut again. Admittedly, that was most likely in the fine print and I missed it, so my bad.

So...while I went into this thinking I'd pretty much have a large majority of my exterior windows washed; I left the deal haggling/cajoling the window washers and making my own decisions on which windows were most important and thus washable w/in my cost cap.

Seems a bit disingenuous and a way to make more cash - knowingly selling something that cannot possibly cover a whole house exterior because of the way the "windows" are counted.

If all window washing companies work like this, well, now I know better for next time and will look for a better "deal" Angie...

Gutter Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Icicles don't necessarily mean your gutters are clogged or bad, but they can indicate an underlying issue. While clogged gutters can cause icicles to form, the problem could also be an ice dam on your roof from poor insulation. In that case, melting snow can refreeze in the gutter even without a clog. Regardless of the cause, the weight of the ice can damage your gutters or even rip them completely off the house. If you are unsure of the underlying problem, it's best to call a roofing company to assess the issue and implement a permanent solution.

Yes, gutter cleaning methods without using a ladder are available, including:

  • A curved wand attachment for your hose

  • Gutter tongs on an extension pole

  • A leaf blower gutter cleaning kit

  • Vacuum designed for cleaning gutters

Just be sure that your downspouts are connected and can direct water away from the house if you’re using a water-powered method. This will keep the water from dumping next to the house.

Hiring a local gutter cleaner costs an average of $119 to $228. For many homeowners, it’s worth bringing in a pro to make sure there’s a regular cleaning schedule and that the job is done thoroughly. A pro can also inspect your gutters and roofline and flag any issues before you start experiencing costly mold, rot, or water damage.

To clean the tops of gutter guards, use a soft-bristle brush or a leaf blower to remove debris like leaves, twigs, or dirt. For stubborn grime, spray the guards with a garden hose, directing water downward to avoid forcing debris into the gutter. If the guards are removable, take them off and rinse thoroughly before reattaching. Regular cleaning, especially during fall or after storms, will help maintain their effectiveness.

If you want to avoid burying your downspouts, several alternatives can help direct water away from your home's foundation. One option is to connect a rain barrel to your downspout. During a storm, the barrel collects water that you can later use for irrigating your lawn or garden. Another common solution is to install an above-ground downspout extension. This can be done in a couple of ways:

  • Splash Guards: Placing a splash guard, available at most hardware stores, under your downspout can act as a simple funnel to direct water away from the house.

  • Downspout Extensions: You can add an extension to the end of the downspout's elbow to carry water further into your yard. Some extensions are flexible, allowing you to maneuver them around landscaping.

These above-ground solutions are particularly useful if your home has a slab foundation that you cannot dig up. However, they have limitations. An extension may not move water as far from your home as an underground system. More importantly, if your yard slopes back toward your house, these methods will be ineffective, and burying your downspouts remains the best option to prevent potential flooding and water damage.
