This occurred in fall 2011, or maybe spring 2012 I'm reviewing them now because I let the ceiling repair go, I let the poor customer service to ask to unseal my door go, but now that this new inspection shows MAJOR MAJOR flaws that I paid for and let them seal the door shut so no one could go up and see without a saw to cut the door open all these years. It started with an energy audit on my newly bought old 1900 home. I was recommended to "add vents and insulation" So I called Thor because they were on the local list. (I now regret I did) I didn't know if it was subbed at the time Just after I called owner about the sealed door a few years later he sounded like he had sub contracted it out most likely at that time of energy audits and tax breaks. Problems, First, one of the workers was up in one section of my attic as it then cracked my plaster ceiling down while up there, I mean serious 3 x3 section of plaster fell down hole and dust. I watched it happen. I didn't end up calling insurance because I was too nice, and dumb they kept insisting it had to be rotted rafters on my house, so I believed them since I did already have cracks in that plaster before. I let that go unfortunately. They offered to screw up an old 3'x4'board. Its still up there, because I can't afford to put the ceiling repair on the front burner even today.
After the fact I still had ice dams on the roof, with NO improvement what so ever all these years. After they were done insulating the attic to specifications such as wrapping heat ducts and blowing in insulation, (cellulose) that actually put it up over the recommended height of insulation. (not best product) and putting things in for air flow, they SEALED the door shut with liquid nails. So... no one could open it. A couple years later I called the company to ask since they used liquid nails and I could not get up in my attic, could the company come unseal it for me, since they had made it non accessible to me without a saw. He would not come out, (owner) he said "No, that program is over with". I was a little suprised he didn't help since his workers sealed it shut (likely on purpose) without telling me I'd need a saw. So I had to pay someone to saw it open with a special saw. Then, we find this year in my inspection (as to why the h*** my ice dams are still bad) ALL the plastic air shutes they put in are fallen down because they didn't secure them at all, and they were 4' shutes and I needed 6 ft ones in order to work anyway. They were not stapled on, so they all had fell. They blew in cellulose, which I was told would not be done these days, as not the best thing for various reasons, plus, they blew cellulose OVER fiberglass! Dumb, because fiberglass is the waterproof product it should be on top. (ie. they should have used fiberglass blow. (not paper) If they had blown in fiberglass, it would be more spendy, but more standard, and Way better and cleaner air. Now its a dust bin up there with various types over various types. EVERY vent was not breathing because the shutes were not put in properly, and they didn't properly seal my furnace vent. They did NOT wrap my furnace vent at all, and that was the (main) source of the heat all these years, I thought they did what was supposed to help prevent hot air leaks. They tried with metal but did it wrong and the inspection now says they did not actually seal it at all properly so all these years I've had SEVERE ICE dams because my furnace heat was still escaping into attic. Also my access door was supposed to be sealed by them, they just put a big thick foam on the back of it but not around edges it, so the foam did almost nothing since the heat escapes around it. There was other things we found done very messy or missing being done. We have the first photos, since door was sealed, and they show the short non secured chutes fallen, the unwrapped furnace stack, cellulose was blocking my sofit vents all the way around. So I now am paying more to undo what they did and re-do what they did wrong. I am mad because all these years I thought they wrapped my furnace pipe in the attic during that audit, I wish it had been inspected, but no true inspection of it ever occurred obviously. (costly to me for many reasons)

The fire was so damaging that 2 joists had to be glued and bolted in place. Our insurance company covered the expenses for the job. As Golden Hatchet required a payment we just withdrew the money and paid them. Now months after the job is done we find out there is a lien on our home. Lampert is the company that supplied a lot of the product that was used for the rebuild. Golden Hatchet collected money from us that should have been paid to Lampert as they were the vendor. This did not happen so now there is a $3059.57 lien on my home. This even after we have a lien waiver signed with Golden Hatchet. NO complaints what so ever about Patrick. I had the inspector come out and he said I needed insulation around the part of the tube that was in the attic. Took about a month in a half but I got it done yesterday by Steve. He was wonderful as well. The issues I had with this company were the "office staff". They were a bit rude and not willing to work with the customer (from the beginning of the process to the end). When I originally scheduled the insulation to be put on I was told a date and a time. When that day came the time came and went. When I called the girl told me she didn't know what happened but they weren't coming. I had to reschedule which was a huge inconvenience for us. Overall the workers are amazing but the people who schedule and work with the customer on the phone are not as pleasant.

Craig came out for the quote and covered up any areas that risked getting messy while he was looking around in the attic. Thoroughly explained his intent for work based on the audit we had done and the deficiencies he found. We had two other contractors look and note the same checklist to complete, but Craig not only had the best demeanor, but he had the best quote (one of the contractors never got back to us). When it came time to schedule Craig was very responsive by email and had his crew out right at 7:30 to start to work. The attic went by without a hitch in something like 4-5 hours. The group came back the next day (we split the work into two days) right at 7:30 to work on the basement. They asked permission to cut through sheet rock to access areas that were missing insulation and dealt with a whole mess of mouse poop and icky insulation. They cleaned up well aside from the dust and did what they could to repair any large holes left from the work (our basement is a work in a progress so we didn't care much about cutting into anything since everything is coming out anyway). There are some areas outside where the spray foam hit the house or the rocks outside, but otherwise everything looks really great and we look forward to our next utility bill to compare it to last year and see how much more efficient we're running now. I am pretty sure they may have subbed out this job (workers). So all this is due to unprofessional insulators being subcontracted to do this work. They were supervised and the job was overseen by Thor manager, owner, or supervisor at the time, named Scott, so they have to take the blame....

"I needed insulation work done in my attic. Insulation Inc. was GREAT from first contact through follow up. Carlos contacted me immediately upon my requesting a phone call and came out ASAP to look at the project. He proposed an effective, cost-saving approach to the job and promptly sent me an estimate that evening. The quote was very good, very fair, and I accepted. Then, he arranged to have the work done within a couple days. The crew was here yesterday and were excellent; good communicators, friendly, clean, mindful, and efficient. The quality of their work was superb. Having worked with many contractors during my days, I couldn't have expected the project to go as well as it did. For more than 30 years, Houle Insulation Inc., a Minnesota based insulation contractor, has been re-insulating homes in Minnesota just like yours. A better insulated home is more energy efficient, comfortable and quiet. It will save you money on utility bills for years to come. And, by using less energy to heat and cool your home, you reduce the negative impacts on the environment caused by energy use. Houle Insulation Inc. specializes in re-insulating existing homes; sidewalls, attics, bypass sealing and blower door testing in the state of Minnesota. Blowing cellulose insulation into your walls and floors, and sealing attic bypasses can reduce high heating and cooling bills, ice dams and drafty rooms. Some other problems homeowners are faced with are frost, mold and water damage to ceilings. The discomforts of a poorly insulated home are often wrongly blamed on furnace and air conditioning problems when the actual cause is the insulation or installation of the insulation. You could save significantly on your heating and cooling bills by having attic bypasses sealed and insulating your walls and attic to adequate levels.
"Todd is amazing. He came to give me an estimate and found the leaky window in my basement that was causing cold air to be the problem for my kitchen sink/plumbing. He suggested I caulk myself and was so pleasant. It was totally free and they did not need to do anything. I offered to pay him for his time and expertise, he said NO. So great to have a company like this. Believe me, if I ever need some real work done, they are the people I would hire!!"

FAQs for insulation service projects in Columbia Heights, MN
When choosing a professional insulation installer, consider asking these questions to determine the best fit.
Will you address air leaks in my house?
Can you provide an R-value (heat resistance) fact sheet?
What kind of insulation will work best for my home?
How do you handle signs of a water leak?
Are you licensed and insured?
Can you provide customer references?
The best type of insulation for your home depends on what you need, so the answer will depend on your specific situation. If you’re building a house, structural panels are easy to install during the building process in addition to being the most energy efficient type. If you live in a warm climate, reflective insulation may benefit you more as it costs less than other insulation types. And for standard attics, loose-fill, spray foam, or blown-in insulation work well.
If you plan to heat or cool your garage, you’ll need to insulate the garage ceiling. Insulating your garage ceiling will make your garage much more energy efficient and save on heating and cooling costs. Not only does insulation make your garage more energy efficient, it helps reduce noise and can extend the life of your garage roof. You can use fiberglass, cellulose, mineral wool, or spray foam insulation for this project.
In some cases, you may not have enough insulation to properly regulate your home’s temperature. Watch for a few signs your home needs more insulation, such as:
High heating and cooling bills
Uncomfortable room temperatures
Ice dams on the edge of your roof
Roof leaks
Cold floors and walls
Freezing pipes
Temperature fluctuations
Visibly low insulation
Noise problems
Pest problems
On average, insulating an attic costs about $2,500, ranging from $1,500 to $3,500, depending on the insulation type, amount, and your attic’s accessibility. Additional cost factors include sealing air leaks, removal or replacement of insulation, and inspections.
Types of insulation include:
Blown-in: $1–$4 per square foot
Spray foam: $2–$5 per square foot
Batt: $2–$4 per square foot
Structural insulated panels: $4–$7 per square foot
Loose-fill: $2–$5 per square foot
Reflective: $0.50–$1.50 per square foot
