"We met with several landscape company's and chose Nelson's for our residential backyard complete "re-do" on Rush Lake (Crosslake, MN). PART 1: Nelson's installed our entire yard sprinkler system. Rob proved that grass CAN grow in our area's sandy soil with consistent watering (since this is our weekend cabin, we could not have accomplished this without a well designed system). NOTE: I was pleasantly surprised how inexpensive this was. PART 2: Rob designed a landscape plan for our backyard, removed trees, improved the grade and made grass grow in a very shady area. PART 3: Rob designed & installed a flagstone walkway, patio and fire pit relaxation & entertainment area that really fit a tight area in our backyard. We are SO pleased with the results, just what we hoped for! Rob was great to work with, easy to reach, met with us continually throughout the projects. He continues to service our sprinkler system each spring and fall and is always available for any programming questions. We highly recommend Rob Nelson and Company for any residential project from a sprinkler system to a complete landscape design and install."

"Nice hard working team. We were comfortable having them in our yard working. Weather (rain) played a part in delaying our project. End result is good."

"I think they treated the wrong lawn. The note they sent me via text message referenced trees and shrubs in my yard, I have none. They also did not leave a yard marker showing they had been there. Otherwise, this would have been a 5 star review."

Lawns questions, answered by experts

It typically takes six to 12 months for leaves to decompose entirely. The process involves the mulch composting into your lawn to deliver nutrients that facilitate grass growth. The recommended process is to spread a thick layer of leaf mulch over your garden and let it marinate for a few seasons for best long-term results.

You have a few options to get rid of raked leaves, including bagging them and leaving them out for yard waste pickup. Even if you hire a professional for leaf removal, they can often bag the leaves and leave them for you to dispose of this way. You can also recycle and even donate yard waste. If you have a compost bin, your leaves will be ready to help your plants grow, reducing spring cleanup landscaping costs. Some companies will even accept donations of raked leaves to make compost, but you’ll need to transport them yourself.

To remove old grass effectively, you typically need to dig to one to two inches. This depth typically allows you to reach the root system of the grass, ensuring thorough removal. However, if the grass is a particularly dense or deep-rooted variety (such as Bermuda grass), or if you're planning to replace it with a different landscaping feature, you may need to dig deeper to loosen the soil and remove any underlying roots.

Pulling weeds once per month is typically often enough to keep most weeds at bay. But in general, it's best to pull weeds as soon as you spot them to prevent deep root growth and slow their spread. To make it easier, plan your weed pulling after rain or after the sprinklers run so the soil will be nice and wet and the weeds will be easier to pull. If you notice moss accompanying weeds, make a plan to remove the moss immediately to prevent damage.

Yes, but it depends on what you have planted in yours and the extent of the damage. Hardier shrubs and plants with droopy leaves have a better chance of bouncing back, but do go ahead and cut back any broken branches or damaged portions. Fertilizer can help, but wait until you spot new growth before you feed any plants.
