Gallagher's Carpet and Flooring is a local small business owned and operated by Tim Gallagher. We are located here in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan. We are available and open to all customers, whether it's residential and or commercial. Some of the important things about us and that we take pride in is the customer service, quality of the work and the wholesale pricing we can offer. We sell all grades of residential and commercial carpeting and flooring. We have a great selection of carpet, laminate flooring, carpet tile, ceramic tile, rugs, mats, hardwood options and special need flooring for gyms, restaurants etc. We travel 60 miles for residential work and further for larger/commercial jobs. We also provide in-home/business estimates and measurements. Check out our website or Facebook page for more information. Give us a call or email us if you have any questions! Thanks!

"This place is unethical and overpriced, stay away. I called on Friday to get a range of pricing for laminate flooring. I received a range from 1.99 to 4 per square foot. I went into the store on Monday to look at options. A man named Tim came over and when I told him I called on Friday and was there to look at laminate, he told me in a very brusque and rude manner that the cheapest option was starting at 3.50 per square foot. I left, confused and flustered. I was concerned that it was either racism and/or sexism as a brown woman, so I called two days later and asked for the laminate quote once more. I spoke with Tim again (but on the phone this time), who told me the range was from 1.99 to 4 per square foot. Clearly something despicable, unethical and downright nasty is taking place within the store if they will treat people that way. I recommend avoiding this place at all cost. It’s also much more expensive than their competitors around the corner, Lumber Liquidators, who have wonderful options at .99 per square foot with a great warranty. They are also very helpful, kind and provide great service. They will work with you for as long as you need through several options so you get exactly what you want. Don’t give a horrible company like this one your business."

Wholesale Flooring and Custom Installations, All Major Brands Represented. Measuring Service / Free Estimates. Carpet / Linoleum / Hardwood / Laminate Floors i.e. Pergo / Ceramic Tile / Vinyl Floors / Concrete Sealing / Moisture Control / Floor Leveling Certified and Insured. Able to Pass Drug Screen and Criminal Background Check

"Lack of communication and completion. John installed about 950 sq ft of luxury vinyl plan floors for us. He works shorter hours 3-6 hrs a day) so it took a quite a few days for him to install the floors. He was not able to salvage the older floor base quarter round, so he suggested vinyl cove. Then said - after ordering it - that it would be an additional install fee. We agreed on a price, and when floors were finished, we then agreed that maybe the original quarter round would be best to install given some of the “features” of existing walls making the vinyl cove difficult. He also needed to do something about my crawl space trap door. He began June 11 and left June 22. He said he could return some time after July 10 to complete the job. He was paid in full for all but the vinyl cove molding. Since then, I have procured the base molding and vinyl cove (just for kitchen and bath), but we have not heard from him. We are here only seasonally, and it has disrupted the summer to have furniture, etc out of the way for flooring and molding install for so long. I would give him a 5 for just the floors, but lack of completion and communication is the influencer of this rating."

Carpet Installation questions, answered by experts

When it comes to flooring installers, licensing laws vary from state to state. Even if your state doesn’t require your flooring installer to have a license, your municipality or city might, so it’s a good idea to check with your town before getting started. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines.

Hiring an unlicensed flooring installer could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

The cost to install flooring is $2,990 on average, but the price range is between $1,500 and $4,460. You can expect to pay about $12.50 per square foot, but that can go as high as $22 per square foot for hardwood flooring.

Factors like the size of your floor, the materials, and your geographic location will impact the total price. For example, the average cost of new flooring in Boston is between $1,200 and $3,250 while you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $5,700 for new flooring in Los Angeles.

A transition piece between carpet stairs and wood flooring isn't always necessary. A transition piece separates two types of flooring in between rooms and areas, like carpet and vinyl. Because the carpet on the stairs tucks into the seam, you can’t see the fringes, and there is no need to hide anything. However, you can use a stair cap if your stairs have a nose.

You may get better coverage painting your baseboards if you do so before carpet is installed. The best course of action may be to attempt to paint them between having the old floor removed and the new floor laid, though this will render the room unusable for a period of time and may make the entire project a bit slower overall.

No, thick carpet padding isn’t necessarily better than thinner padding. The appropriate padding thickness will depend on the type of carpet and the amount of foot traffic in the area.

For example, thick padding works well in low-traffic areas, like bedrooms, where you have soft and plush carpeting. However, thick carpet padding can damage low-pile carpet, which is used in the busiest parts of your home (like hallways and entryways). For that reason, it’s best to use thinner, heavier padding underneath carpet in high-traffic areas.
