A setback is an area of space between your fence and the property line, meaning you build a fence a few inches before your neighbor’s property begins. You can build your fence on a setback—some communities recommend this—but this means a sliver of your property will be on your neighbor’s side of your fence.

Making a homemade pallet fence involves marking out the fence line and leveling the ground along it. Then, install metal or wooden fence posts that you slide the pallets on top of (two posts per pallet). Fasten them together with 2x4 wood boards that act as an extra layer, keeping the pallet fence secure.

If you only use your gate as a pedestrian, walking through without a vehicle, you’re fine to stick with a single fence gate. If your fence opening needs to accommodate vehicles of any kind, from cars to trucks to 4-wheelers, then a double fence gate will suit the space much better and give you more freedom. 

In the vast majority of cases, chain-link fences are less expensive than wood fences. Installing a wood fence costs anywhere from 20% to 30% more than a chain-link fence, or an average of $3,100, whereas a similarly sized chain-link fence will average around $2,400. How much does a privacy fence cost? Stockade fences cost $12 to $13 per linear foot for materials. You may find fencing that costs less, but it’s likely wholesale wood manufactured using young trees. Fencing materials made with young trees are less durable than those made with mature trees.

For installation, expect to pay $30 to $80 per hour. Installing a 150- to 200-linear-foot fence takes 20 to 35 hours, which comes to about $600 to $2,800 for labor.
