I had emailed him photos of the rooms and my measurements of square footage. I called him on our way back, on a Tuesday, to confirm the job and gave him a $100 deposit over the phone. On Wednesday his subcontractor, Ruben, called me and set up for Thursday, and by that evening they were done, all popcorn gone and everything cleaned up. I emailed him a photo of a check for the balance and that was it. The simplest process of any home repair we have ever had done. "

No, but it’s common that they do. Gravity furnaces weren’t terribly efficient so wrapping either the ductwork in asbestos, the furnace itself, or both, was something done regularly. This allowed the system to retain more heat. The EPA also categorizes hazardous wastes as listed, which includes specific byproducts or unused chemicals from manufacturing and industrial processes, universal waste, including bulbs, mercury, pesticides, batteries, and various other common substances, and mixed waste containing radioactive material.

Federal and state grants for asbestos testing and removal do exist and can help homeowners with the associated costs. In some cases, local housing grants help homeowners who have to remove asbestos as part of home repairs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also provides funding to help schools manage asbestos removal, but it doesn’t extend to homeowners. 

Asbestos-containing materials are not easily affected by water and do not disintegrate or dissolve when exposed to it. However, porous materials can deteriorate due to water exposure, leading to the release of asbestos fibers into the air. The settling of asbestos fibers can also occur as water makes them heavy, which reduces the risk of airborne exposure, though future disturbance of the materials could cause risk. Wetting asbestos-containing materials does not constitute safe removal, and the proper handling and disposal of asbestos materials should be left to professionals.
