Small jobs welcome

"Oh my goodness, top notch people and fantastic work! I honestly cannot praise them enough. We had an asphalt driveway that needed to be ripped out and new asphalt laid down. We also needing some grading of our driveway done after having our new garage put in two years ago. To their surprise and ours, we had a foot or more of asphalt that was uncovered. They ripped it all out, leveled out the area, and put in quite a bit of crushed gravel for a solid underlayment for the asphalt. After getting it all smoothed out and ready for asphalt, I saw them digging again. Turns out we had some soft spots, so they dug down in those areas removing more soil, and put down more crushed gravel, smoothing it all out for a second time. Lovell clearly takes pride in their work and does it right. The next day they put a nice thick layer of asphalt down in our driveway which we had marked out together with spray paint. (I plan on edging the asphalt in brick, so I wanted a curve here and there.) Lovell also repaved over our long easement. We now have roughly 7500 square feet of beautiful new asphalt. I wish I could post pictures, it looks so good! Wonderful wonderful people and outstanding quality work."

"very good. They took the time to determine how to go about with the service, then quoted me. Since the weather was iffy, I took photos and sent them to them and they stopped by and gave me a quote. It was raining, and he could see from the photos that more thought would be needed to address the driveway."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.

Asphalt edging secures the sides of your driveway to prevent crumbling and cracking over time. Most driveways have edges with a 45-degree grading. This helps transfer some of the stress from the asphalt to the ground underneath. If your driveway doesn’t have proper edging, the pressure from your car may break down the edges over time.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Overall, a paver driveway is considered the easiest to maintain because homeowners are able to do driveway repair one piece at a time without impacting the rest of the driveway. Unlike paved options, paver driveways contain individual stones that aren't physically connected. By comparison, you may need to reseal or redo a full asphalt driveway if just one portion sustains a significant crack.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.
