Putting off cleaning your fridge is a bad idea for a few reasons. For one, any food spills can build up, making it much harder to clean your fridge when you finally do get around to it. Plus, any stray pickle juice or leaky leftovers are a recipe for a stinky fridge.

Following a few basic tips for maintaining your front-load washer can extend your unit’s lifespan. 

  • Clean your machine monthly and always use the correct detergent. (If your machine is High-Efficiency, only use HE detergent.)

  • Avoid fabric softener.

  • Leave the washer door open after a cycle to avoid moisture buildup.

  • Remove all of the wet clothes promptly, and wipe down the machine after each use.

  • Conduct an annual inspection yourself or hire someone to check that your machine is in tip-top shape. Proper maintenance means your machine will clean your clothes as best as possible, and you’ll prevent common issues like mold and mildew build-up on the seal or clogged filters from the water inlets.

Bleach isn’t the best choice to use while cleaning a refrigerator. Food absorbs odors, and bleach is known for its lingering smell, which can then lead to your fresh foods tasting off. Most people don’t safely dilute bleach, either. If you’re concerned about bacteria or mold from contaminated food, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a bleach solution of 1 tablespoon of bleach to 1 gallon of water for sanitizing. Be sure to let the fridge air out for an hour or more afterward to let the fumes dissipate.

You will need to discuss with your pest control expert to know when and what to clean after the treatment. Sometimes, you may have to wait a couple of weeks for deep cleaning to avoid wiping up the treatment they applied.

However, you’ll want to wipe down any surfaces you use for food prep and eating. Before the treatment, you’ll also want to make sure that items such as pet dishes and children's toys won’t be exposed to the chemicals.

While you can perform many routine home maintenance jobs yourself, it’s often a good idea to bring pros in for certain tasks. HVAC maintenance, fireplace and chimney inspections, foundation repairs, and roof inspections and repairs should be handled by professionals who know what to look for and can safely perform repairs.
