Clean Sweeps of Michigan was founded in Clarklake in 1980 by a local fireman and eventually sold to long-time employee, Cliff Slagle. We provide the best in chimney and dryer vent care to our family, friends and neighbors throughout Mid-Michigan, Northern Indiana and Northern Ohio, and have maintained the highest standards since our inception. Our team of Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney sweeps have always been dedicated to keeping your chimneys and dryer vents as clean and as safe as possible. LICENSE #71-06288.

"The old fireplace was rusted and had to be replaced together with the flue and the covers at the top of the chimney. The project was done on time and at the cost within the limits quoted initially. There were no cost surprises at the end of the project. They also work with a credit company that can finance the project for a good deal (no interest for 18 months at that time). The team was professional and they finished the work on time (the actual work took about two days). The cost was maybe a bit more pricey than the average, but the job was well done and without extra costs or surprises at the end."

"A-1 Mechanical installed my gas fireplace during the construction of our home. We have not been able to use the fireplace since we moved in because it emits noxious fumes, sets off the fire alarms, and makes you sick. We have repeatedly reported the problem to A-1 Mechanical. Although the technicians have repeatedly observed the noxious fumes, their only advice was to continue running it until it burns the chemicals/paint off. Ten years later after numerous attempts to burn off the chemical/paint, and several inspections by A-1, they are telling us the same story and denying anything is wrong. Despite the technician's acknowledgment that the fireplace is emitting fumes, they are writing a false report to the manufacturer that there is nothing wrong with the unit. Apparently A-1 mechanical does not stand by their work or the equipment they install."

"We hired AAA to clean up after a fire we had. I think others need to be aware of their practices. They give the key code to everyone on the job. Those people in turn give the code to their friends. People were coming in and out of our house freely. While we where in a hotel while they "cleaned". Workers and sometimes their friends were coming in and out of our house at all hours. They also would hide "merchandise" around the back of the house and by the dumpster and come in late at night and pick up the stuff. Sometimes they "work" unsupervised. I would come home in the middle of the day and people would be in the master bedroom just looking at stuff. Or while most people would leave for lunch, they would stay behind and just go through everything. I came home one day for lunch and there were 2 guys there while everyone else was out to lunch. I would ask what happened to different things and they would look at each other and shrug there shoulders suggesting "I don't know". While we thought things were going out to be cleaned they where not. They were taken. We only found out about it after going through the boxes once they were returned. AAA knew about the initial theft and yet told no one. Deciding instead to keep it to themselves so they would get paid. Had we known of the first initial incident, we would have moved back in right away to save our stuff. Instead the initial theft of a stereo led to many more items being taken. Because the employee was mad because he had been caught taking a stereo. He came back that night and wiped out half of our basement. Then came back on a Saturday and took everything else. We have lost many precious family heirlooms that will never be recovered. Our valuables are now all over the city of Toledo. Lost forever. We hired a company to clean after the "cleaning" was complete and they would show me buckets of black water. Showing they really didn't do a good job cleaning. They also hire employees from a third party, like Manpower. You could have convicted felons working in your house with an all access pass to everything you own. Get the name of everyone who is working on your home. A quick google search of there name will show that they have a criminal record or not. Have an extra lock on your door that cannot be opened with the key that they have access to. When they are finished, CHANGE YOUR LOCKS! If at all possible, stay in your residence while the work is being done. Don't fall victim to this scam like we did. Watch everyone all the time, even if they seem nice BEWARE!"

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The formula for neutralizing skunk smell is one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and one to two teaspoons of dish soap. The University of Nebraska says a chemist discovered that this mixture changes the thiols, the chemical compound that causes the odor, into acids that don’t carry a skunk smell, thus eliminating the odor.

Unfortunately, you probably don’t have much legal recourse if you think you’ve been scammed by an air duct cleaning company, but there are some actions you can take. Your first order of business should be to report the issue to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Your complaint will show up to other customers doing research and, ideally, prevent the scammer from getting to other homeowners. You can also leave a negative review on online review sites. If you got scammed out of a large amount of money, you may want to seek legal counsel for advice.

Several factors contribute to the persistent growth of mold in vents, with excess moisture being the most common culprit. Consistent mold formation in vents indicates an ongoing moisture problem within the HVAC system or its surroundings, likely caused by condensation on cool surfaces in areas with high humidity. Moisture accumulation can also result from leaks in ductwork, inadequate ventilation, or insufficient insulation, creating an environment favorable for mold growth. Regular inspections, addressing potential sources of moisture, maintaining proper ventilation, and routine HVAC maintenance can help prevent the recurrence of mold in vents. If the issue persists, seek professional assistance to identify and rectify the underlying problems.

A blockage in the ductwork may prevent air from flowing through the vent. If some rooms in your home are very hot or cold and another isn't, that can be a sign that a vent is blocked. Another sign of a blockage is a buildup of dirt or dust around the vent. In either case, a duct installer or cleaning service can investigate the issue for you and recommend a course of action.

Mold in air ducts releases spores into the air, which cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues. Common symptoms include coughing, sneezing, or itchy eyes. Prolonged mold exposure can lead to more serious health issues, especially for those with compromised immune systems.
