"We called Wayne (business owner) on a Friday, he came out the following Monday to assess the problem and give us an estimate for the repair. He explained why the porch roof was leaking; and explained what needed to be done to resolve the issue. He came out the following week as promised. On day one, he removed the snow from the roof, from the peak of the house and from the roof of the attached porch. Then he put down ice melt for the ice dam. Initially, the ice dam was 6 inches thick on the porch roof's edge, spanning back 4 feet. Water had started to puddle behind the ice dam. He chiseled out a channel thru the ice dam so the puddled water behind the ice dam would drain off the roof. On day two, he removed the remaining ice, removed the shingles beyond the transition point of the house and porch roof, added insulation board over the porch roof, installed quality ice shield beyond the transition point and over the entire porch, then re-shingled with matching shingles. Our issue was resolved! And, the cost of the repair was at the quoted estimate! We can't thank him enough for a job well done, using quality materials and providing quality workmanship!"

Snow Removal questions, answered by experts

While DIY is possible for small areas, professional services provide fast, efficient removal for large properties or heavy snowfall.

Yes, and they do it exceptionally well. Heated roof cables have two purposes: melting snow and preventing ice buildup. Ice damming happens when ice forms on the roof (usually where the roof meets the gutter) and melts stubbornly slowly, causing moisture to enter the roof itself and, therefore, the home.

Yes, but it works best with lightweight snowblowers, the single-stage models or electric versions. Also, you need to have a rubberized intake edge on the ground and preferably rubberized auger paddles, not a metal version. Otherwise you may chip or damage the surface as you work. When it doubt, let the snow lie.

You can also use a snow blower on leveled gravel, but only if you carefully adjust the intake height so it doesn’t kick up the gravel and turn it into flying missiles.

Whether salt melts ice overnight will depend on how low the temperature drops. If temperatures stay around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, you can count on salt melting ice overnight. Otherwise, the lower temperatures get, the less effective the salt is in melting ice, and the more likely you’ll wake up with a slippery driveway the next day.

Ice dam removal is costly, but it’s absolutely worth it. If you leave an ice dam as is and don’t take care of it, you’re looking at potentially dangerous situations and high-cost repairs—like roof collapse, leaks, mold problems, gutter damage, and more. Removing ice dams is essential to keeping your home and your family safe in the snowy season.
