"Keith was able to accommodate my schedule, arriving promptly on an afternoon that I could be home from work, before our house was to be put on the market and just after the painters finished decorating. The work was done thoroughly, moving beds and dressers to clean everywhere, putting the furniture back in their place and setting them up on blocks to protect the damp carpet. They were happy to clean a futon and an upholstered chair that I hadn't previously thought to have cleaned. Keith made sure I was satisfied with their work; he pointed out the few spots that had rust stains which could not be removed. All in all, good communication, on time, good workmanship, friendly. "

It is possible to reupholster directly over old material in some cases, and it can save you a bit of money. If you are going to go this route, make sure you use a darker color than you had previously. Otherwise, you might see the old fabric beneath the new material. You should also keep in mind that reupholstering over old material is only possible with certain materials. For example, reupholstering over leather usually isn’t possible. You can ask your professional to see if this is an option for your piece.
The best way to test the quality of a leather couch is to put your hands on it. If the upholstery is soft and warm, that’s a good indication that the quality is higher. It should also smell like traditional leather. If it smells like chemicals, you’re probably dealing with low-grade leather.
DIY upholstery is feasible for simple pieces with the right tools and skills, though intricate jobs typically require professional expertise for the best results.
When hiring an upholsterer, look for a pro with experience in your chair type, positive reviews, and a portfolio of completed projects. Ask about their process, timeline, warranty, and whether they are insured. Getting multiple quotes from reupholsterers in your area and checking their references can help ensure quality and fair pricing.
Consider durability, color, texture, room use, and personal style when selecting fabric. Fabrics like linen, cotton, or microfiber offer versatility and strength.
