"We were extremely pleased with the work done by Greater Lansing Paint Company. Ryan was professional and prompt with the initial visit to go over the exterior of our home with us, and his estimate was reasonable. The communication was great via email/phone to schedule time and eventual dates to do the painting. Lots of attention paid to details - thorough power washing, replacing boards when needed, caulking, and even dealing with wasp nest. Two coats of high quality paint were applied by brush and roller. The crew of Ryan, Trudy, and Chase made this whole process comfortable and enjoyable while working efficiently and on time. We are so pleased with the results, that we are now contracting with them to do the interior of our home in the near future. Highly recommend this family owned business!"

"It was a pleasure getting to work with Pedro and Sayagos Home Improvement. Pedro came out at the drop of a hat to help us with some siding that had blown off/ had some buckling in it. Pedro was very professional and got the job done in a timely fashion while also giving me some pointers on how to repair it myself if something ever occurs like it did again in the future. Pedro was very knowledgeable and professional and his pricing was very competitive for the work that was conducted. I would highly recommend Sayagos for anyone looking for work to be done/ installs for roofs, siding or gutters."

"Excellent work. From the beginning of the meeting with the sales rep through the workers that handled the deck replacement, they were all friendly and professional. When the installers arrived on day one, they had the old deck tore off and the new deck done except for the stairs. The next day they completed the deck and cleaned up the work site. Love my new deck and how quickly the job was completed. I will hire them again for other projects I need done."

"Found Sentri on Angi. Jeanette and Violet were very pleasant and efficient in getting a contractor to me in the time frame needed. The contractor was excellent and the roof looks great! I would definitely work with them again if I had additional projects."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.
