"Prompt, courteous, explained in advance what they would do and they did it. Our first experience with them was when they climbed up on our roof in a rainstorm to fix the leaking roof. They needed to construct a roof drainage cricket which we greatly appreciated them doing in the rainstorm. Next, they replaced 4 rotting posts that were holding up our 2-story porch deck, replaced some rotting porch deck frame joists, and all the decking on the same porch. When replacing the rotting posts, they poured concrete piers for the posts to rest on above ground, rather than just sinking them into the ground as had been done for the initial rotted posts. Finally, they replaced one exterior door and also a very heavy double French door. They always hauled away the debris and were very friendly and knowledgeable. Plaster is a beautiful finish but is labor-intensive to install and remove. It’s vulnerable to cracking and more sensitive to moisture variance than drywall. Installing plaster on a new wall is an expensive process that can take days to weeks, depending on the scope. Removing a plaster wall can also be quite expensive and time-consuming.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

There are several warning signs that a ceiling crack is connected to a larger issue. For starters, if the crack is wider than 1/8 inch or longer than 12 inches, you might have a more serious problem. The same applies if you have multiple smaller cracks or cracks going across the ceiling and down the wall. In any of these situations, you should ask a professional to assess the damage.
