Our existing concrete driveway, built in 1939/40 was broken in many places. The remains of a 3 foot tall retaining wall barely kept our entire driveway from sliding into our neighbor's driveway below it. The existing retaining wall was made of stones cemented together. The stone did not allow water to seep out so repeated freeze and thaw cycles had pushed the wall over. Not only was it leaning into the neighbor's driveway, parts of it had broken and fallen into his driveway. Davey's Dozing came over and tore out the broken concrete slabs and the old retaining wall. They replaced the retaining wall by fitting new fieldstone together without mortar. The water can now seep out between the stone. They put a drain in along the driveway and put in gravel. While over here, we mentioned that our front concrete stoop was now leaning due to the concrete slab it was on. Davy's called in another company they work with and they came over to raise the stoop along with some other problem areas we had. It was all done within 2-3 days. It has been several years since the work was done. Both the driveway and stone wall are still beautiful. While they were here, I found out the secret to their stonework... They call one of their employees the "stone whisperer". Apparently, he listens to the stone (he most likely just studies their shapes) and stacks them which is why they fit together so perfectly. I thought that was funny but a definite selling point. We had a very good experience working with this company. With that price, she asked if he could do the concrete where the asphalt ended a foot inside her fence and the end of the sidewalk to her home which borders the driveway. He said, "No." He told her the job had to be done right away due to the weather. When she later called to inform him that she was going to seek other estimates, he lowered the price $400 and said he would do the extras about which she had earlier inquired. She called a second time to tell him she was having someone else come to the house to give an estimate. He told her he had already purchased the rods and was delivering them to her driveway the next day. He was very high pressured, expensive and unwilling to negotiate until after she told him she was looking at other personnel. She is older and severely arthritic. It appeared as though he was bullying her. She was too upset to call again. I did; to tell him "No!!" He conceded before I had even finished telling him we would not be using his services. Gravel Driveway Repair reviews from real Angi homeowners in Augusta, MI
We had planned on doing a driveway extension pre-pandemic with quality concrete and masonry. They were very communicative on timelines during the expected delay and as soon as the restrictions were limited they did the job. So to me that is extraordinary in itself. The work was high quality...
Very professional! Our existing concrete driveway, built in 1939/40 was broken in many places. The remains of a 3 foot tall retaining wall barely kept our entire driveway from sliding into our neighbor's driveway below it. The existing retaining wall was made of stones cemented together....

"John came out very promptly gave us a reasonable quote. We like everything thing he explained to us. Regarding our driveway along with different things we can consider. At the end me and my wife decided we were gonna use him. Yes he was a bit higher but I’ve always said pay a lil more for better service, quality, and workmen ship."

Gravel Driveway Repair questions, answered by experts
On average, asphalt dries within 24 to 72 hours, meaning it’s solid enough for light traffic—walking and careful driving. Full curing—when asphalt reaches peak strength—can take anywhere from three months to a year. During that time, heavy loads and sharp objects can leave marks. Weather, asphalt mix, and thickness all affect how quickly it dries and cures. If you want your asphalt to last, treat it gently until it’s fully cured. For the best results, check with a professional asphalt contractor for their advice.
If your driveway is cracked, you can repave it with a process called asphalt overlay. Overlay is more cost-effective than a full replacement but is better suited for minor cracks and issues. If you have major cracks or other problems like water pooling, asphalt overlay isn’t your best bet. Plus, paving over a cracked driveway only extends the lifetime by about 10 years, whereas replacing it would start the clock over completely to give you up to 30 years.
When hiring an asphalt paving contractor to install your driveway, ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective driveway contractor:
How many years of experience do you have?
Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?
Do you have worker’s compensation?
Do you use subcontractors on your projects?
Do you clean up after the job is done?
Who is responsible for any damage to lawn or landscaping?
Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?
Do you give free estimates?
What is the timeline for completion?
How do you handle change orders?
Can you provide at least three references?
Can I see some of the work you’ve done?
The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.
Though they may look similar, tar and bitumen come from different sources. Bitumen is a petroleum product—extracted during crude oil refining—and is mostly made up of hydrocarbons. Tar comes from burning down organic materials like coal or wood. Bitumen is strictly oil-based, while tar is a mix of compounds from natural sources. Both are used as binders in paving; however, bitumen is the standard for today’s asphalt. Tar use has mostly faded out of road construction.
