"I hired them to re-roof my home and in conversation I mentioned I need to have my asphalt driveway sealed, not even knowing they do this work too. They asked me if they could bid on the driveway project too. This all happened in a short timeframe and I was very impressed by their timeliness and quality of work. The owner came and inspected the roof after completion and asked me to look at it with him. We climbed up the ladder and he explained everything and answered my questions. A double-cylinder deadbolt features two locking mechanisms and requires a key to be operated from both the inside and the outside.

To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. The 2-foot by 6-foot boards will serve as your stiles, top rail, and horizontal and vertical mullions, and the wider board will serve as the bottom rail, which is usually wider than the other horizontal pieces. The plywood will serve as the panels, but you’ll need around five 1-foot by 6-foot boards to make your own panels if you want to stain the door rather than paint it.

Most modern door knobs will all fit in standard, modern doors, so if you know your door was made in the last 50 years or so, you should be fine buying a standard replacement door knob. The only exception would be a thumb latch handleset for an exterior door, as this type of door knob may not fit your door without drilling a mounting hole for the bottom of the handle. If you took measurements of the door and can’t find the correct size in the store, you may need a custom-size screen door. Many door manufacturers produce doors fit-to-size using individualized dimensions. Another option, if the door opening is smaller than standard, is to have the door frame opening cut larger to accommodate a standard-sized door.

You can use wood, metal, or plastic as a door shim, but keep in mind that wood will rot easier than the other two materials. Your local hardware store should have at least one type in stock. Alternatively, you can trim a piece of cardboard to fit underneath your door hinge and work as a temporary, makeshift door shim.
